Well wasn't sure where to post this as need random advice on various things so probably here is the best bet. Well the plan is to make my army up as much as possible out of the plastic models available and doing lots of conversions (for the most part because I am cheap, and secondly because I love modelling.)
Well anyway, I thought I would give the army list and how I plan to model each thing. Would love to hear what you think, and whether anyone has any better ideas for how I am going to do things before I start having knightmares about green stuff. Also any comments as to whether the list itself would be in any way competative/ fun to play!
Ok, so lets start with characters.
Lord - warhorse, shield lance, Virtue of Knightly temper, Gromril great helm.
(This will be converted from one of the plastic knights of the realm, but with lots of bits stuck on to make it more interesting, as well as planning on making a huge cloak for him flowing backwards, using metal foil like you get in a tube of tomato puree and some green stuff. may also do something to the helmet to make it look more dramatic, or I just plan to paint it with a gold effect rather than silver. Also plan to cut the horse in half and alter the structure so it is stood back on its hind legs with the front ones sticking up into the air.)
Paladin, warhorse, BSB, virtue of Duty, sword of might.
(Again KOTR, this time standard bearer, but with plans to change the banner to one made out of the metal from puree again, since I really am not a fan of the metal model for the BSB, prob will do something to the model as well when I get into it.)
Paladin on foot, Virtue of empathy, enchanted shield morning star
(ok, top half from the KOTR, legs of a M@A, not sure at the minute what I will use for the morning star, will have to see what bits I can find. Will prob also make the Shield look special with a paint job rather than modeling, unless anyone has any ideas.)
Damsel mounted, Chalice, Dispel scroll
(Simple, the mounted damsel model)
Damsel 2, mounted, silver mirror
(This one will be difficult, since it will involve sawing off bottom parts of the model and rebuilding legs from green stuff, will have some wood elf glade rider legs, as well as this for the horse so might use them as a base and build green stuff cloak over the top to blend in with the robes of the model.)
7KOTR, full command, war banner, (one damsel and BSB here)
7 Errants full command, erranty banner (One damsel and general here)
(again the standard ones)
24 men at arms, standard bearer and musician
12 skirmishing bowmen, braziers
10 bowmen, stakes
10 bowmen, stakes
6 mounted yeomen, standard and musician
(ok, back to some modelling, here we are using the glade riders again as the base, and then M@A bodies on the top half to try to create a reasonable looking compramise since I am not paying the price for the crappy metal ones. also gonna use green stuff to make little packs and things hanging off the side of the horses to make them look a bit like they are used for hunting and tracking. Biggest problem here is the polearms with the M@A look a bit crap as spears. will look at what else i get in the gladerider kit. Also m@a standard bearer will be converted, and something for a musician, though dont know what yet. dont want them to just look like men at arms on horses. Bows on the backs from the elves kit as well. )
3 pegasus knights
(again standard, may make more interesting models as I collect more but for now 3 standard ones will do.)
(ok, these should be interesting. using and converting some M@A again to make the crew, and then plan to use balsa wood and string and balsa wood and actually build two miniture trebs, especially cos the GW ones look really wierd as if they wouldn't actually work, I wanted something bigger and more dramatic, as well as being distinctly cheaper though more work)
well thats a 2000pt army, and I can do it all with
2 bret batalions
1 Kotr box
1 pegasus knight
1 damsels box
1 wood elf glade riders box
Anyway, tell me what you all think, whether the army is any good (if its easier will post it in the army list section) and I will try to keep everyone informed with how it is going hopefully with some lovely pics along the way!
Seems like a good idea. I'm thinking about buying into another army myself, and am planning to convert most, if everything, of the metal models. My friend made a really nice Treb for LoTR, but it looks really good. For the mounted yeomen, Pistoliers are a great base to convert, they only need the top half replaced.
The list looks okay, but fairly rough. Four Peg Knights is better as the extra two wounds means that you can drop one and still have US 6. Lots of points are spent on heroes, drop the paladin on foot, he won't do much anyway; this'll pay for the extra Peg. Anyway, got to go. Have fun.
Armies: (Chaos) Space Marines [1250pts], O&G [2250 pts], OK [1000pts]
Da face of Mork looks down on the Gobbers of da Bwoo Moon, da bestest Gobbos eva.
I made my trebs out of coffe stirrers from starbucks (and you call yourself cheap *Tuts disaprovingly*).
But be carefull on the size (mine are like the size a actual treb at 28mm would be not the muted GW 28mm... *grumbles as he remembers the problems he has had fitting them on hills ect*). Anouther thing Mounted Yeomen look better made out of pistoleers as elven steeds look to delicate.
My bret lord is made of chaos knight with filed down spikey bitz and a bret horse head+ a knight head. ask around and see if you can obtain one it makes him stand out loads.
but otherwise great cant wait to see it done!
thanks for the advice. Still gonna go with the Glade riders for the Yeomen, as I actually prefer the look of the wood elf horses to pistoleers, they look a bit more dynamic and mobile, and I like that the peasant horses look a bit smaller and a different breed to the knights warhorses. Also I much prefer the Wood elf legs for the conversion, the pistoleers are really heavily armoured, which for guys that aren't even supposed to be wearing light armour doesn't quite fit.
Anyway, whilst I have ordered online my hefty order of models and green stuff, I have been busy working on the first of my Trebs and should hopefully get some picks to you later today. Appreciate the comments about going to starbucks, but since I used 6 foot of balsa wood for 1 treb, and I managed to get it for 50p the cost was prob less than the obligatory coffee I would have felt like buying to not feel guilty for stealing so many stirrers!
Its not quite finished, as I need my green stuff to arrive, and am stuck at work now so can't put up the pictures yet but they are coming. overall am pretty pleased with it, and don't think it will look too giant on the battlefield.
Ok, here are some pics of the WiP treb. they aren't the greatest quality as were taken with my phone!
Ok, I have know how the pictures will look when I post this, they look really big! And sorry about the quality too, may have to invest in an actual camera. Anyway, still to do, is to create a green stuff pouch around the string at the end, for where the stone will go, and to add some green stuff to some of the joints between the wood to look like metal plates strengthening them and also hiding some of the problems. Then it needs a coat of watered down PVA to make it a better surface to paint over and absorb paint, as well as making the string a bit firmer.
Oh, and need to make another one for the list as well so if people like it I could do a 'how to' type thing on the modelling forum.
Now that is awsome looks much more medeival than the GW one!
realy great and by the way if you walk in and say your doing a school project requireing coffe stirers they give you a box for free! Ive got 1000 left!
but I know where your coming from with regards to the horses. I use wood elf ponys for my damsel's to help them stand out...
good luck and amazeing treb REP!
