So a lot of the new books can build these rather tough "Deathstar" units. We all know the regenerating grave guard bunker, or the chosen backed by two war shrines, or dark elves black guard with ASF banner and assassin, but can Brets do anything close to any of those?
It looks tough, but I'm wondering what it would look like if you stacked a unit with fighting characters.
To me it seems like it'd need to be grail knights with ItP and 2 attacks at base Str 4 and In 5. Bear me out and then tell me how wrong I am (I have zero Bret exp. but am looking to snag an army from someone).
9 Grail Knights, Bret Lord, BSB, Paladin.
Holy Icon on Lord to give unit MR3, should divert magic elsewhere.
War banner on unit champ
BSB with +1 combat virtue, banner of the lady.
Static res would be +3 for ranks, +1 unit banner, +1 war banner, +1 Battle Standard, +1 Virtue of Duty, +1 probably for US when the dust settles. That's +8 not counting attacks.
4 attacks from lord, 6 from paladins, so 10 from the front rank. 12 attacks from knights on flanks (3 on each side). So 22 attacks. Then 9 horse attacks.
Looks brutal, as an idea. What do you think? What am I overlooking?
How would you build a deathstar?
Just for further overkill, can you not take GKs in units of 12? Just for another few attacks. And why not stick a damsel in there too for a bit of magical buffing? Spells like the howler wind could be fun.
I can't remember. What happens if a stubborn character joins a unit? Does it use his? If you had a stubborn paladin inside an ItP unit, that'd be nasty, especially with a BSB. If the stubborn passes to the unit, that is. Hmm, need to go check rulebook.
Yes, stubborn does pass to the unit (p. 78/9)
Yeah, I've found that out with a big unit of greatswords in my empire army!
Yeah there's not much that can stand up to a charge form 12 Grail Knights. I have run the exact combo on my unit of Grail Knights before (Holy Icon, BSB combo). The only really problem for it are war machines. You're left with a 5+ WS but a cannonball can still be devastating for such a high cost unit.
Another good Lord to have in there is the challenging lord. Have him challenge (which can't be refused) and rack up the combat res from that challenge.
I don't normally take a unit that big for that reason; everything will be thrown at it. A unit of six with perhaps a paladin or even a lord can perform just as well sometimes while attracting much less attention.
This Roman knows...
Well, while this deathstar looks immensely potent, it can still be avoided, screened, flanked and so on. It is also rather susceptible to shooting, and stubborn and unbreakable things.
Now you mentioned the Black Guard...?
Have you heard about the dark elf shade death star? 30-60 shades with BS5 rep crossbows and WS5 great weapons, joined by 2-4 characters with ASF banner, ring of hotek and MR3 pretty much stops magic, and ofcourse great weapons. Add to that the guiding eye that allows the unit to reroll shooting misses one round.
This unit would outright kill the entire grail knight unit except characters with one round of shooting and a stand and shoot charge reaction. And best of all - it cant be flanked or avoided because they are skirmishers. Thats just insane. If you get into close combat the entire unit led by several characters have great weapons and hatred. To get there you even have to get through a stand and shot of somewhere between 70 and 130 armour piercing bolts.

Yeah, Aurere. I know that one. The guy who came up with it is in our gaming club. He didn't run it very long. It caught a lot of flack from other gamers who were exasperated being shot to pieces, and against some armies it had a hard time.
