Topic of the Week - Damsel and Prophetess
This is the start of a new series, that will hopefully bring new ideas and tactics to the forums. Each week, a new topic will be posted up about a different unit in the army book. This gives you your chance to discuss the unit to its fullest. So, please leave your comment!
This week's topic is - Damsel and Prophetess
How useful to the Bretonnian armies are these characters? Which lore is the best for them? What items do you find are worth taking? How do you use them? Mounted?
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that prophetesses are just not worth it.
Damsels are essential. Dispell scroll and silver mirror are awesome. At <2250 I use 2 damsels, both lv. 2. One I've got in a small group of skirmishing bowmen, and the other in a unit of KE.
I think it's tempting to stick them in the second rank of GKs or behind a Paladin, but it turns that unit into a crazy target. Damsels are cheap enough that they can be spread out in my opinion, and it forces enemy archers and such to make decisions.
Nonononono! i would say a level 4 is just vital!
I played several games where a level 4 caster vs lowlevels simply dominated the entire magic phase, not only because they have a wide variety of spells, but every time they roll they get +4 to cast. The smaller the game the higher the impact it will have on the magicphase.
Silver mirror is indeed very very nice.
Im going for a lvl 3/4 with my skirmishers and a lvl 1/2 in a core lanceformation (the magic resistance is also nice for the unit).
Banner of defense on the questing knights and the dispel damsel makes a nice combo, because she gives MR1 that adds to the banner, while the lady can use her magic misiles from rank 2.

Well I have been using a level 4 to great effect. I was also using a level 2 but there never seems to be enough power dice to cast all the spells so I think that 6 wizard levels may be overkill.
In terms of placement, I have bad experiences with miscasts (blowing 6 knights to kingdom come on the first spell, in an effort to regrow 4 peasants), so I only put a prophetess in a knight unit if she has the throne of vines, and that is the first spell I cast. My damsels go on foot, usually not in but just behind a big block of men at arms, to avoid combat, shield from shooting and minimise damage from miscasts. I may seem paranoid about miscasts but in my first few 8th edition games my magic phase nearly destroyed my own army while achieving very little.
In terms of Lores, I think life is best. Some of the beasts spells are awesome too though, T4 S5 men at arms with the signature spell is cool and savage beast of Horros on a lord is just brutal in challenges,
