hey guys got another question for you
i was thinking about running a grail reliquae in my army. im thinking about running it with 30 battle pilgrims and running it 10 wide to turn it into a hoard. i think it would be pretty decent as they are stubbord , they have hatred and now have a 6+ parry save. what do the rest of you guys think?
The GR benefits from the blessing, so wouldn't the parry stack with the blessing to be a 5+ ward save? I don't think it does, but it would be great if it did!
Personally, I am not sure if the GR needs to be a horde. Sure, they would get a lot of attacks, but you would not do much damage with their low WS. They are meant to be a tarpit and they can do that job with much fewer and that will save you lots of points to spend elsewhere.
The grail has the blessing when you pray, as its in the relique's rules.
As for the usefulness, i agree with MDSW: its a great tarpit, but since the unit is not cheap ( both in points and in $$ ) i would say keep the unit of reasonable sizes.
Warchief Diggah o da Bloodmoon Squiggahs
Hatred is great, but it is only the re-rolls in the first round. All in all it is one of the best tarpits and I love my GR and I field it all the time with 9 pilgrims, which is not a lot, but enough to hold up any enemy for enough turns to charge them on the flank with another unit.
The parry doesn't increase your blessing ward save as its not a +1 to the save but an alternative to it. This is one of the reason that the Tzeentch ward in WoC is far superior, as that's actually a +1 to any ward save you have. Damn the Chaos scum!!
And back to the thread itself, the Grail Reliquae is for me one of the best tarpit units in the game. Now that your Lords can be 25%, u can bang a cheap lord in there with shrieking blade and now you have a Hatred, Stubborn and Fear Causing Unit, that has a 4 Attacks Lord running in it to challenge and overkilling other unit champions. i used this last night at my gaming club and it worked perfectly well. Obviously you cant get too much information out of one game, but they cemented there place in my next army list
Btw i run it as Grail Reliquae with 18 B.Pilgrims, and a lord with Shrieking blade, and Virtue of Empathy.

I can be a bear of little brain, so tolerate my clarification please. I do not own the new edition WHFB rules yet, so I have nothing to refer to.
1. The GR is intended to slow a unit to allow something to sink a flank charge into it.
2. The best method for employing it is to have 18 folks attached to it.
Have I missed anything?
OK with the new warhammer rules to break ranks, a unit must have at least two ranks charging into flank or rear. so in order to stop your opponent from turning to face your charge every time you manoeuvre to make a flank/rear charge you need to have a unit hit the front and hold it up, giving you a turn to get your knights in. but men at arms cant fight, lets be realistic they cant. so for me a GR is an awesome unit, its stubborn, so even if it does lose combat it will not run unless you roll over a 8, and if BSB is near by you have a re-roll, and not alot of units in the game can get rid of a 24 wound unit (18 guys and 6 wounds on the GR itself). Now you ask is 18 the best number, hard one to answer as this is down to the community you play against, as a 40 man swordmaster unit, would possibly chew through a 24 wound unit, or a horded chaos warrior unit of Khorne would also wipe it out. if you arent facing that kinda thing then 18 guys is fine. if you are facing that kinda list then you will need to max out which is unfortunately only 24 Battle Pilgrims, and hope it survives that 1st round off combat, cause after that, the knights are in and the game changes very quickly. Hope this helps in some sort off way
