So it's been about 15 years now. I've been lurker Librarium for a few years now, just in case I decide to get back into it.
The last time I played WH was Rogue Trader 40k. I have NO experience with Fantasy. Back then my RP group stuck with Chainmail and for the sci-fi stuff we stuck with battletech and 40k mostly.
A few year ago a friend was interested in Fantasy. So we went and he got a battalion of wood elves and I got myself some Brets. Then he realized he had to paint then and stuff and he just got lazy and we didn't even bother get to playing. So my Bret sat on the shelf collection dust with all my old 40k stuff.
Just recently, a friend from one of my other forums for scale modeling called me out on Fantasy. We talked about getting together to play but I guess he's making it happen. So I have two weeks to cram in a 2k army for the Smackdown Con coming up in SoCal.
That means, I have two weeks to come up with an army list, learn all the rules and get my army painted. Back in the days, this wouldn't be a problem with 40k. Now, fantasy is a totally different beast I'm beginning to see.
So I have a few questions. Most already answered by people on my YT channel but it's easier and faster to ask stuff in a forum than to make a video. I've already when looking through the posts here in this forum but a lot of it is people talking about 8th and how it's affecting units and stuff and kinda messing me up a bit for someone that doesn't know the previous edition rules. I wanna go in this without a rose color painted look least it might mess me up in play. I figure starting from a new guy stand point, I'm not missing anything. lol
1. Did they take out the restriction for needing a Lord leading the army on an Royal Pegasus to be able to field a unit of Pegasus Knights? I notice a lot of the army list posted here have 3+ unit PKs and their lord on a warhorse.
2. What does "w/ full command" mean on some the of the units you post?
3. What do I do with my ABSB? Just have him riding around solo screaming at people? Or can I start him out with a Cal unit (say KotR). And if I do, their vows have to be the same right? Same question with my lord. Do I start them with a unit at the start? or do I join them in later and if I do, what exactly is the rules to the vows?
I got the old bret battalion. 3 PKs, 16 M@arms and Bowmans, 8 Knights. I had since gotten a Knight Regiment set (another and the Bret Codex. On order and coming in this week (I hope) is the 8th core, Green Knight (I got him for a steal on Ebay), Damsel Blister, Battle Standard knight, and a Bret Lord on a Warhorse.
Now I'm trying to put together the army list but not knowing some of the answers above I'm having a hard time with it.
If I need a lord on a R. Pegasus then I have to use one of my pegasus knight which I'll convert easily. But then I'm left with a 2 unit PK which won't work (I need at least three right?). So I figured, let's make them paladins riding R. Pegasus and put the BSB on a pegasus too... but now I run into the 25% rule on Heroes. I can get one Damsel in but I wanted at least two (mount and footed).
But if the limit isn't in place, then I am safe. I'd just keep the lord on a warhorse with the BSB and field a 3 man unit of PKs and still able to have two Damsels to field.
Now with the new rules I'm reading about and the need for more foot troops, I'm sitting at 16 bowmen/M@arms. Should I be getting more? Should I just go order another battalion?
Also, how do some of you guys convert a regiment box of knights into questing nights? Buy bits for the hand weapons?
And that's the other thing. I doubt I'll be playing much WH after this game. Money isn't the issue though GW is freaking expensive. I just don't like GW much anymore.
Back in the days, the were the bomb but I'm quite pissed that I can't easily buy from my hobby online shops to try and get a game going. This experience so far is horrible for the mere fact of just trying to acquire stuff just to play. So I rather not have to throw more money at company who's business practice seems to prevent people from wanting to play unless I have to. I rather save the money for the games I'll be switching over to (Warmachine and soon, Mantric games). But that's another subject for another day.
I just want to get this crap together and play my friend at the con (and get my butt kicked probably) and then throw the stuff back on the shelf when I'm done and call it good.
Thanks for the help ahead of time!
Oh one more question, is it better to have one big unit of knights (15 knights) or two smaller unit of knights (9 Knights)?
1: I do not have my Bret book in front of me, but a general with grail trait can remove restriction on max number of pegasus knights.
2: "w/full command" refers to a leader (villein for archers and M@A, gallant for knights etc etc, a standard bearer and a musician.
3: Not sure what you mean by ABSB.
4: Bretonnians get a mandatory BSB for each army.
5: I usually attach my leader types to lances (3 figures wide by howmany deep-only outside figures can fight - Damsel can cast from second rank)
6: M@A are a good method of getting an enemy unit to stick (the unit with the most ranks AFTER combat gets "stubborn") allowing for a knight unit to charge into the flank/rear. By far the best way to employ those units. Even better would be to hit the enemy unit with 2 lances charging! (wow -what is that red gooey stuff on my destriers hooves?)
7: I agree with you about the cost of the GW figs. Amazing how they have hgalved the number of troops in a box (thereby doubling the price) and making mass units effective, utilizing the stubborn special rule, explained above.
8: I am toying with number of knights in a lance also. I have had success with earlier rules version using 2 units of 6 KE and two units of 9 KoR. Now including the archers and grail religuary have forced me to alter this. I have asked about this on this forum and the genral concensus seems to be as many lances of 8 KoR (with a damsel in second rank) as you can get, or KE to save points. Ignore Questing Knights. Grail Knights are awesome, but in my experience, they become the target for every tough enemy unit on that table and are neutralized early.
Hope this is accurate and helpful, I am still getting familiar with the new version of rules myself.
A good place to look at some builds and feedback is in the Bretonnian Army List threads. But, here is some info on your questions:
The Bretonnian Army book you will get is based on 7th edition. There is the Bretonnian FAQ on the GW site, which is based on 8th edition. In order to play you will need the 8th rulebook. This is only available in the huge $70 tome. Some of us (like me) are waiting to get the mini rulebook that will come in the Island of Blood set due out 9/4.
If you want to lift the restriction of the number of PK units, then you must have your general on a royal pegasus. But, a character on a peg can't join other units, so he would be all by himself and you can't have a unit of 2 PKs. So, you have it right with putting your Lord/General on a warhorse in a knight unit and l unit of 3 PKs to hunt warmachines, flank charge, etc.
I think you will surely need more bowmen and M@As. Bowmen can fire in two ranks with a 30" range and hordes rule the day in 8th, so a big block of M@As will be useful.
Also, definitely units of knights no bigger than 9 IMHO. The changes in 8th mean you can't slam cavalry into units and break them on the charge as easily anymore. You will need to combo charge with two units or flank charge. I find a unit of 9 with a unit of 6 on a double charge works well, but even then you almost need to get a flank charge to negate ranks and such.
Full command means a champion (free with Knight units!!), a musician and a standard bearer. I find some of the smaller knight support units (6 each) don't need a standard bearer, but always a musician and they get a free champ.
Your ABSB can run around separately, if you want, since he is a paladin. I put mine in a knight unit. He will only need the extra vow if you put him with Quest or Grail Knights.
Hopefully, you will have a good experience and continue. It does not need to be very expensive with all of the stuff you need on Ebay at a good price. Even though you may not be supporting your local shop, GW still makes their money, believe me! It would be sad to see your army sitting on a shelf!!
OK cool. Thanks for the help guys. Though I got my butt kicked and 5 turns lasted 5 hours. lol We were both stumbling through the rules. I also round I messed up my army list and actually had more than 100+ points I could have spent on magic banners. lol
But I had fun and I'm going over all the rules again. Bat Rep here: YouTube - SMConsortium's Channel
Now that I'm getting the hang of it, I need to play more!!! Anyone in Los Angeles in the Valley? Let me know.
I'm definitely thinking about some other lists including taking out my GK units for KE units. And I should be running around charging things instead of just hanging back and waiting to see what the other guy is going to do. lol
Gonna check out FoW and WM as well as taking out my SM, Eldars/Harliquins for 40k. I miss it too much.
