I'm an Empire player & am about done collecting everything for that army that I want. I'm debating between starting a second army of either Bretonnia, Warriors of Chaos, or Vampires.
I like to make 2500pt armies & was wondering if it would be a good idea to make an army around the Green Knight. For lords I would take a Lv 4 Prophetess as my general and then the Green Knight, for heroes a BSB and maybe another support paladin or two. I would like to only use Questing Knights, KotR, and Knights Errant, in smaller blocks with only a rank or two. No peasants!
Would this be a good idea or a waste of money & time??
My two main armies are Brets and Woc, so here are my takes...
Brets - My favorite army, they just epitomize the golden age of knights. You may not like our dear peasants, but they are very useful. The bowmen with a 30" range are great, although they won't kill a lot, they are cheap and your enemy will focus some effort to get rid of them, which keeps the heat off of your knights. You also need a tarpit and the M @As can do that. I have found that balancing the troop types is critical, since we don't have an absolute game winner anymore, i.e. charge all the knights and break the enemy off of the board. I love my Grail knights and Grail Relequae and never hit the field without them! I also just started using the Green Knight and he is a lot of points, but cheap for what you get - especially when you slamm him into some poor infantry unit that does not have magical attacks, so they cannot harm him and he just wails away... I just finished converting some regular knights into Questing knights and I need to finish painting them will try them out soon, so no battle experience with them, yet.
WoC -These guys are awesome in that the troops are just so good combat wise. Good magic, best infantry in the game, cheap marauders, best knights - and, it is the perfect enemy/opposite to your Empire. I am adding some Chaos Ogres (converted Bulls) that I thought I would try out. The only common unit I have not tried yet is the Hellcannon, which seems to be pretty popular. The marks and the eye of the gods can really boost up units and characters to simply amazing. I also think the models are some of the best sculpts (the marauders could use an updating, but with swapped out heads from warriors, they can look great).
Overall, I think Chaos has the most options and battle strategies available to them over Brets. But, again, Brets are the most colorful and will always be my favorite.
Seconded, i agree with MDSW about both armies. Cant go wrong either way
(except grail knights are pussypants and questing knights are awesome!)
going for only small blocks of knights sounds a bit risky to me, add at least one or two lance formations of 9+ models, so you can smash into hordes harder and have an easier job removing steadfast.
