MaA can be equiped with either a halberd or spear; what's the benefit of the spear?
According to the rulebook, the spear will let them fight in an extra rank, but isn't this already the case with the new rules that a model directly behind a model in CC can make an attack? For the MaA, the added strength bonus with the halberd seems to make sense.
Is the only benefit of the spear choice, being able to use a shield?

I believe it's an extra rank when you *don't* charge, in addition to the extra rank you normally get, and the rank you could potentially get from fielding a hoard.
To wrap that all together, it's a max of 4 ranks of attackers when you get charged if you use a spear I think.
If your goal is to hold up very strong units, then sure, you could go for the halberds, as the extra strength would be useful. Against other hoards or masses of weak units (or even fast units of cavalry that you expect to get charged by) then the spears are probably a better bet for the added attacks.
From personal experience and discussion, the spears tend to be the favoured choice, but your style of play and what you want your MaA to do is going to matter the most
Ok, benifets of spear instead of halberd.
1) Halberd is a two handed job, no shield bonus so higher armor save
2) Hording with spears, 40 MOA with spears = shield bonus and everyone attacks receiving the charge. First Rank attacks, second rank supports, 3rd rank horde 4th rank spear bonus.
So the benefit with spears really happens when you have 40 in a horde. Otherwise you can just have 30 troops in the horde fight with hand weapon and shield or trade defense for offense and use a halberd.
If you have less than that, say a unit of 15 or 16, spears allows for all 3 ranks to fight, but unless you plan to use your MOA as a speed bump, I would suggest using the Halberds and getting the +1 strength and fight in 2 ranks.
perfect analyses from both sides, just one thing:
"you can just have 30 troops in the horde fight with hand weapon and shield or "
We cannot use hand weapon/shield on men at arms, because of the new rule that says, if you have a special weapon (halbard and spear are special weapon), you have to use it, there s no choice.
I think i like the halbard more, because S3 attacks are absolute rubbish right now... but it depends on the enemy and tactics i guess..
Warchief Diggah o da Bloodmoon Squiggahs
Dang page 89... So at the start of the game you pick between +1 strength or +1 armor save with the MOA since the hand weapon is more or less decorative now.
thanks for all the input and advice- very much appreciated. Kudos Digger for pointing out the special weap rule; didn't realize that.
