Grail Knights are completely unique in that they are the only "ordinary" knight unit that can be fielded in units as small as 3 models. Such a small unit is very manouverable, and could concievably be used as a small detachment of flankers. They only cost 27 points more than a unit of 5 MY with shields, but with vastly improved combat prowess and survivability. Cheaper than 3 pegasus knights, they sacrifice their mobility for the ability to negate ranks. The problem with the unit would be that they need only suffer a single wound and be rendered nearly useless, possibly apart from warmachine killing duty.
Even though they're dead hard, I dislike fielding big units of GK simply because there shouldn't be that many of them, maybe a single knight out of a hundred completes their quest and drinks from the grail. A small group fits more my idea of them, so what do you say? Is it worth taking a unit of 3 GKs to wreak some smalltime havoc, or is that wasting a rare slot and an excellent offensive unit?
I'd say no. Any armies shooting will be aimed at them first, and atleast 1 will die. Then they will have lost their purpose entirely. These guys are your heavy hitters, and you can only have one squad of them. To use them as an easily killed/rendered useless unit is a bad idea and a waste of your most restricted and best unit. However,i do have to give you alot of credit for thinking up that idea, ive never heard anyone think of it before!
Are you sure about this though, when placed next to a unit of 9 or 12 KotR it hardly seems like the GK are the juicier target. They might be a Rare unit, and individually they might be badass, but in a unit of 3 without command they're still essentially a glorified fast cav unit.
Also, with their 2+ save and blessing, they're hardly an easily killed unit, they should be able to stand against a good deal of shooting without casualties, unlike fast cav. But, one dead knight is enough...
Exactly. It would take only a single round of handgun fire to make them useless at their purpose. Also, they arent as manueverable as fast cav,and actually arent that much cheaper.
No, they're more expensive, but those three guys will hit as harder than a unit of 6 silver helms, they're way better armored than fast cav and are immune to psychology. Also, if you field them in a snaking formation, you can move 4" and "add ranks" to reform the unit (or vice versa), making them more manouverable than heavy cav.
Besides, that single round of handgun fire would make any fast cav unit useless at their purpose too, at least the GK won't run away.
I still say its a waste,it would be much better to use 5 yeomen fast cav. Not to mention its not very fluffy at all,i mean, would the most powerful and honourable warriors of brettonia really resort to attacking the enemy flanks in small units? No i say! But then again,i like brettonians for their fluff, the games ive ever played with them most of my heros would get killed challenging chaos lords and whatnot simply because it seemed right to keep saying "I CHALLENGE YOU FOUL BEAST!"
I actually don't think its that bad an idea - as previously said they will be little more than an annoyance, and even if one does get taken down they will be perfect war machine killers. Thats not to say I would use them over a ranked up lance formation of Grail knights, which is, despite their high cost, my favourite unit!
In 1000 point battles I've been known to field 3-4 grail knights, mostly for support charges. Yeah, they work well however I would deploy them pretty far back out of range of missile fire and out of sight of war machines. However in 2000 point games if I field Grail Knights it's in a unit of 5-6(depending on if a character is riding with them) with a Standard Bearer. Always keep in mind though it's as easy to shoot down a Grail Knight as it is to Shoot down a Knight Errant.
in 1k games i field a unit of 4 gk joined by my bsb, or alone (just 4 knights)
From the perspective of a non Brettonian player I can't see the point of fielding 3 grail knights. Having played against guys who regularly use 12 of them I would shoot the hell out of them regardless of their numbers. After all you could probably take them out in 1 turn of shooting and it would be easy victory points.
