I hate to call anything cheesy, but the Steam tank is a very strong machine and I don't agree with the points cost. the onlt two ways I know of are to use trebuchets or hit it with the Rain lord on the Lore of Life.
If a tree falls in the woods and there's no one 'round to hear it is it still my fault.
I agree that a trebuchet should destroy it, but I don't know how accurate it is.
P.S. What's a Rain Lord? :unsure:

cast mistress of the marsh on it. then watch it roll like it was going uphill towards you lines, as a giant rock smashes it into pieces.
mead you are right, peasents (at least trebuchet men) are badass
well considering the rest of the empire has little weak models... and no dragons and a bad griffon... for 350 points it's quite easily smitten by your 550 point dragon lord. if you dont screw up... just get someone powerful to go up to it, it'll have a cannon (unless he takes Helblaster, in which your screwed.) and... yea... i play empire and i'm unstoppible with Karl franz on the left side of the steam tank, and knights on the right... with cannons in the background for support of course. and magic. and motors. and on
Hmm... I thought I recalled a spell somewhere being able to move trees? That would be extremely useful, block its path then ignore it. Not sure, it could be a woodelf thing though...
I've never had to play against one so I don't really know how else to destroy them, I've seen the stats though and it looks pretty powerful for the points. There is an article on the GW site in the Empire section for how to take it down, try reading that.

They don't attack in CC so I tied one up for a whole game with 16 M@A
Then your opponent wasn't playing right - they are never pinned in combat, and can "grind over" your unit by expending steam points. Unless you can cause enough damage in turn one of the combat, STANKS are not nice to fight against....
One option would be a small unit of Grail Knights that charge in and caus e acouple of "woudns". Remember that even a partially damaged STANK is hampered by the rules for steam points - and if it gets too risky, the Empire player may not even bother moving it...for fear of blowing it up and giving away free VPs
