It was mentioned in the (brief) Playing against thread as well as by some friends of mine that one of the nastier war machines for Brettonians to face are bolt throwers. What makes bolt throwers so nasty as opposed to cannons or stone throwers? Bolt throwers are cheaper, still hit plenty hard, don't require guessing, and don't misfire. Is it just that they're more efficient vs. Brettonians than other war machines?
Simple. Knights are expensive, Lances usually have quite a few ranks. Shooting at a Bret Lance to the front with a Bolt Thrower is essentially shooting at the flank of a normal Knight unit.
Use Light, Beasts, Metal instead of Heavens
NecroLords: Use at least one Death Mage
Brets: Use Peasants&Damsels
Skaven: Don't use Skryre SAD
Well, I'd tend to say stonethrowers are worse in that they are always S4 with no armour save, which couldnt be any worse imho for beating out defenses. The bolt thrower is of course more reliable and has a nasty penality to armour and eventually gets down to below S5 which is bad for us too, but as long as you turn the right way it shouldnt hit more than three knights max.
