Greetings all! My first post in the Bretonnian section (and second here at LO).
I played my first game of WFB in a number of years this weekend, and I completely destroyed my opponent. It wasn't even that much fun as I had destroyed 3/4 of his army on my third turn and had lost I believe 6 knights (and 5 of those were my cheap KE!).
I felt bad for the other player, however he was not very skilled and very young... I tried to make it a learning experience for him by explaining why I was moving my guys here and what he could have done better, but I am not terribly familiar with Empire so could only help him so much. Should I tone down my army list a bit, or wait and see how future games go before I weaken my list up? This is a summer tournament at the local GW store- I want to be competetive but would rather have a fun game and loose than continue with one sided games...
I will not list the complete army list details, but I have a fairly knight heavy list with one lance of KE, two lances of KOR- these are all 8 man lances joined by heroes to make them 9. I also have a 3 PK unit and 5 GK lance. Then there are the peasants- 16 M@A, 20 skirmished bowmen and a treb. Add two damsels with one dispel scroll each... 2000 points.
I thought it was fairly balanced although a bit knight heavy (but aren't Brets supposed to be?).
Knight heavy Bret armies are almost impossible for newer players to beat.. Against your friend you should indeed tone it down a bit so he gets a grasp of the game easier. In the tournament, go for it! But be aware everyone else will be fielding cheesy armies, and experience generals tend to know how to nullify Bretonnians without too much stress. And whether you are winning or losing, you won't have a lot of fun if you found even the first game boring, its pretty much charge straight at the opponent all the time.
Indeed, you may as well play shooty skaven. New players don't stand a chance in hell against that either. Of course an experienced general should beat a new player with whatever army he plays.Knight heavy Bret armies are almost impossible for newer players to beat
Strewart is right about the tourney environment as well, if people think they are all that then mash em(Y)
Can you play special characters in this tournament, because i recently learned that the 06/07 season allows them
For the tournament, your list is fine. (I actually like it)
If your teaching someone how to play (and this is true for ANY game), you really should let them win. Crushing a new player will only serve to make them go play something else.
Thanks for the input guys!
I will keep my list as it is for a couple more games and see how it goes. I have a 2K, 2500 and 3K list with me so I can play whatever size someone else has. The 3K list I want to try out as it is pretty much the same as the other list with the addition of more M@A and archers and a couple more knights in the units and a pegasus hero that is a giant/monster killer.
The game I played was part of the tourney/campaign. The kid was young (12 or so) and I should have gone a little easier on him, however he had just won the game on the table right before we played so he at least got a solid victory that day. It was for tourney points so I did want to win... The kid actually knew how to play (knew the rules better than me after my two year break from WHFB due to my wife and I having a son). I was teaching him what he should have done differently to counter my force. Like he expended most of his spells targetting my trebuchet. I kept telling him it was my cheapest unit on the board and he really should be paying more attention to my knights. After all, the treb only managed to kill one thing all game... I will be playing again on Thursday night. This time I will be playing a more experienced general so I will see how it goes against his Chaos beasts.
As for special characters- I didn't think to ask as I'm not terribly fond of them...
