What do you guys think of this combo; BSB whit war banner and virtu of duty (+2 combat result all the time),and its a lot cheaper than banner of the lady.
Feel free to post other combo.
Let slip the dogs of war.
Bretonian (over 5k points)
Tomb king (over 5k points)
Ogre kingdom (4.5k points)
Tyranid (3k points but not even half assemble, new army)
Not a bad combo at all. My current list uses the War Banner with my BSB and the virtue of Impet. Knight. However I have yet to use the +1D6 charge range and have been thinking of switching out his virtue. I was thinking of going with something more offensive as lately I have been "dice" challenged. I was thinking virt. of the joust, but I will look at this combo as well.
The only problem with that combo is that you've got a lot of combat resolution tied
up in a single character (whose armour save isn't great) - who can be singled out for attack (unlike a normal standard bearer). If he dies you lose the CR.
Usually, a brettonian lance should win the combat easily (using 2 lances in concert
is the standard way). If you are having to rely on the extra CR of the Standard bearer, things
aren't going to plan. If things aren't going to plan you're going to be taking hits in return, and the hits will be aimed at your Standard Bearer.
I don't like spending too many points on a single character. Even with the ward save, I find
them dying too often for my liking.
My most expensive paladin is usually mounted on a pegasus, with the wyrmlance and a shield. He can usually get his points back in dead mages, war machines or skirmish units before he goes down, and he can sometimes get in range in one turn (Full fly move + template).
Just my 2p,
Actually, the above poster has a point. Why do they require Bretonnia (of all armies) to take a BSB anyway. If you're taking break tests, you've already royally screwed up somewhere!
This is why taking the banner that gives you more VPs for captured standards is always better. You can also simply cop out and give him a bunch of defensive items and simply let him act like a normal hero. For example, give him heavy armor and the mithril Great Helm, which will give him a 2+ REROLLABLE Armor Save. There's not much you can do with the 15 points left though (don't have the book in front of me, is there a cheap virtue he can buy?).
