    Lance Formation

    Hey all,

I have only recently decided (more of a sudden impulse really) to collect Bretonnians.

    BUT

I am having a little trouble understanding the lance formation rules. As the book tells it, a unit of knights that are 3 models wide benefit from the lance formation rules, and any models in the flank of the unit and directly behind a model in combat (i.e. the front rank) may also fight to full effect.
This would make the unit somewhat rectangular in shape, i.e. (K = knight)

    K K K
    K k K
    K k K

Facing up the page, all but the little k's could fight.....yes?

So, what is the go with the V formation so commonly fielded by Bretonnians? AND, as i understand it, for a unit of
    a) 6 models (Try to ignore the dots)

    .. .. K
    .. K K
    K K K or

    b) 10 models

    .......K
    ......K K
    ....K K K
    ..K K K K

The boxed set of 8 is insufficent to field a unit properly without wasting models or having to few models.

Any help and/or clarification would be appreciated,

    Regards

The triangle 'real' lance was used in 5th edition, several years ago now.

The newer one, where ranks are 3 models wide, is the current 'lance' formation. It is made this way purely for simplicity.

And yes, 8 is a crap number, GW give bad numbers in boxes a lot of the time. Though I guess they assume you are going to be adding a character, which is quite common. Paladins, BSB's and even damsels are seen in knight units most of the time.

And of course, the small lance of 6 models is used a fair bit for the extra manouvrability, which gives you 2 free knights for other units.
    The LO ANZAC Clan!

The Pirate's Haven BFG clan! Breathe life into this fantastic GW system.

    I also have a question

i was fighting Orcs a couple months back, and in one instance, my questing knights got a charge in on his black orcs. But, as i was about to roll to hit, he told me that since my Questing knights didn't have Lances, they couldn't use the full advantages of the Lance-formation. is this true?

Edit: he saids that the front modals of a unit of questing knights are the only ones who can attack, and they do not follow the lance formation for working out how many attacks.

the lance formation applies to all knightly units, regardless of the way they are armed.

    Speaking of questing knights,

In the latest white dwarf there was an article discussing the knew rules and it mentioned something about questing knights being disadvantaged in some way by the new rules....

Does anyone happent to know anything about that?

They're mounted and use great weapons. They've taken a power hit.

cruel GW ! I do believe we'll see some improvements to QK's as a result of this. For goodness sake, empire can have Wolf knights of the inner circle with immunity to psychology and thats just a wee bit too good as a core choice (with a character of course but still)

No way!! Brets are already sick enough in this new edition, with the new overrun and rank rules. Losing some strength on an already good unit is nothing.

They only get ItP by spending a further 100+ pts on a lord level character. Bretts get all sorts of useful benefits built into their units. QK don't really have much to complain about with the 16" charge range and psych reroll.
