Best Size For Lance Formations?

I am just wondering what you have found to be the best size for a lance formation of knights of the realm, please explain your choice in your post.

I think 8+ Character (9) because it gives you +2 rank bonus and a large number of attacks while not being to vulnerable to being charged in its flank.

Thats exactly what i think although there is always 7 knights and a paladin and a damsel, which may give the unit MR1.

Likewise 6 is too small for a single unit but if accompanying a unit of there are two if them then they do well, and as said 12 or more is just to clumbersome and flank prone...but hey.
