What's Cav?

It's a game by Reaper that would be similar to Battlefleet Gothic, I think.

Today, I played my first game of CAV. It was against a guy named Merlyn (yes, his real name).

He's associated with the DAWGS group, the Dallas Area Wargamers Society, so I also saw him post online sometimes and knew he had moved to Australia. Now he's back and showing up at the Asylum looking for CAV games.

Meanwhile, I was driving back from Grapevine Mills, home of the nearest GW store, where I had first seen Merlyn about 11 months ago when I first moved to Texas, though I doubt he recalls it. I was planning on stopping in at the Asylum to return some old but unused paints when I saw Merlyn there.

I mentioned playing Cav to Mark who works the desk, and he asked Merlyn about it. He agreed to demo a game with me and gave me some Terran units. A Falcon, a couple of Hawk Tanks (I think), and another cav model that had four guns and was smaller than the hawk tanks.

He had the same units and we played on a 4 x 4 table. It was a tale of two dice pools. Merlyn rolled a memorable amount of 1's and I rolled a simliar number of 10's, so my guys ruled the battlefield.

I checked out some of the blisters on the wall and admired some of the painted models in the display case. I'll give the game another try and see what I think. I enjoyed the game I had but need to read up on the rules. It's a very different mechanic than what I'm used to.

No, you have tanks, flyers, infantry, and mech-types.

CAV is a lot closer to Battletech than anything else. It has an awesome minatures line but a fairly complicated (IMO) rule set.

The turn mechanism looks like it could be brutal. I played just one small game, so it wasn't that bad.

I play occasional games. My models have been locked away for the time being though, because once I moved here I couldn't find a decent enough player base to validate paying so much for the models.

Overall, the game is quite similar to BFG and/or the old Robotech. Supposedly, when Robotech sold out, some of it's old-gaurd got angry and headed for Reaper with their new rules. The rest sat around and went for Mechwarrior clicks when they hit the market.

Cav is a fun game though- the models can be a bear to put together though sometimes. And aside from Merlyn, have fun finding games. I was a die-hard, I had a deck of cards custom made with my faction sign on them and color-sketches of my favorite mechs for the face cards.

As to the turn system- it has it's snarls. It balances out. It's really 50/50 when you look at the odds. And if a player gets all his turns in early, he's a sitting duck later on. My personal best (opponent's worst) was me decimating his force before he got 2 turns in. The game is kind of like GW LotR, it's fun, but not always fair.
Congrats on finding it, and double congrats if you start to play it.
