I'm going to be playing a game with the breakthrough?? scenario....dont have book by me but its the one where the table is divided in thirds and the attacker has to get units into the 2nd and 3rd part. I am going to be the defender in this battle so need a few ideas as to what I should take, as I've never played a scenario where my only objective was defense. My opponent plays guard so it won't suprise me if he brings at least 1 lisk, probably 2.
The game is going to be 1500pts and so far I've figured on taking
2x10 deathguard squads maxxed with plasma guns
8x havocs with 4 missle lauchers
at least 5x raptors with 2 meltas to get a start on any tanks/lisks
That's about as far as I've gotten, I'm at work and dont have codex next to me but i'd have to assume that would put me around 1k pts?
I think the Plague Marines and Havocs are a good idea. Get them entrenched in some nice cover and buckle down for a battle of attrition. I'd suggest maybe adding a second havoc squad as well.
With Guard, I imagine your opponent will bring lots of vehicles. So make sure you have plenty of anti-tank. I'd suggest bringing some deepstriking terminators. Your opponent is going to be focused on moving forward, giving them a great opportunity to land directly behind your opponent's line and hopefully reduce his forward momentum.
I've never done breakthrough, but it seems like you could lure your opponent into a very nasty trap - keep the Plague Marines and Havocs taking his attention and kill vehicles, while your raptors or bikes move in for the kill in close combat. Don't forget the Icons of Khorne.
Obliterators could prove very valuable in a defensive game. You can either use them as a Firebase, or deepstrike them near a tank and fire twin-linked Meltaguns at a tank's side or rear armor.
