    Newbie Chaos Daemons 2000pts list

Okay after getting my hands on Codex: Chaos Daemons and watching a few battles I've composed myself a 2000pt list as my eventual aim. Baring in mind that I've never actually played Chaos Daemons I've come to the *hopefully* experts on them for some sage advice

My Warhammer 40k background consists of playing Tau, Chaos Marines both Khornate and Iron Warriors in the previous chaos codex and off and on playing Orks so its a bit of a spread but nevertheless I'm sure I'm missing a lot when it comes to CD's. Anyway I'll stop rambling and post up my army list with my general stratagies for units.

    HQ
    Herald of Tzeentch – Discord – 125pts
    Daemonic Gifts:
    Daemonic Gaze
    Chariot of Tzeentch
    Breath of Chaos
    Master of Sorcery
    Chaos Icon
This boy i plan to send in in the first wave and get up nice and close while *hopefully* surviving any return fire for a turn or two. My idea is to use him as a focal point for the flamers and for them to travel around semi-together (seeing as he's not independant he won't be joining them exactly) and he'll either use the flamers for cover or provide them some cover. Basically i plan to either hop around at 18" and rain death down or get up nice and close and BoC things.

    Herald of Tzeentch – Havoc – 95pts
    Daemonic Gifts:
    Daemonic Gaze
    Chariot of Tzeentch
    Bolt of Tzeentch
Light tank hunting (i.e. transports) and causing a bit of damage to MEQs etc. Due to his relatively cheap pointcost he only has to do in a transport or two to easily make himself back.

    Total: 220pts
    Elites
    Flamers of Tzeentch – Deceit – 140pts
    4x Flamers of Tzeentch

As far as I understand flamers I'm planning to get them up closeish and chew up squads if infantry with my template. Or if faced with foes that could cause them a lot of issues in combat try and sit at 18" and warpfire away. Both squads will be used in conjunction with my first herald.

    Flamers of Tzeentch – Confusion – 140pts
    4x Flamers of Tzeentch

    Bloodcrushers of Khorne – Anger – 120pts
    3x Bloodcrushers of Khorne
I plan to deploy these in the second wave and focus them on the plaguebearers who will hopefully still be living by the time they arrive. I then plan to use these to tie up heavier infantry in combat or to combat enemy closecombat specialists who don't have very high initiative values.

    Total: 400pts
    Troops
Pink Horrors of Tzeentch – Trickery – 170pts
    10x Pink Horrors of Tzeentch

Pink Horrors of Tzeentch – Fickleness – 170pts
    10x Pink Horrors of Tzeentch
These two squads are basically there to chew up infantry, in particular light infantry. They'll most likely come in the first wave to draw both attention from the plaguebearers and to hopefully do some damage.

    Daemonettes of Slaanesh – Splendour – 168pts
    12x Daemonettes of Slaanesh
My daemonettes i plan to have arrive in the second wave and will be used to combat high initiative combat specialists and power-armoured troops. Along with the bloodcrushers they will focus on the plaguebearers chaos icon.

    Plaguebearers of Nurgle – Plasmodium – 175pts
    10x Plaguebearers of Nurgle
    Chaos Icon

Plaguebearers, the keystone of much of my second wave. Basically i plan to deploy them in the first wave, hopefully up nice and close and then sit them behind cover or somewhere where i won't loose the whole squad and then they'll hopefully just act as sponges with their higher toughness and FnP.

    Total: 683pts

    Fast Attack
    Screamers of Tzeentch – Insanity – 80pts
    5x Screamers of Tzeentch
Well... they're screamers, they tank hunt. Not really much else to them. They'll be targetting transports and possibly high AV vehicles that my khorne dp hasn't dealt with.

Flesh Hounds of Khorne – Fury – 120pts
    8x Flesh Hounds of Khorne
The flesh hounds i'm not so sure on. I was considering either a unit of these or a unit of seekers of slaanesh as to me they both fufil much the same role, a highly mobile CC unit which i can use to tie up things that are trying to kite my squads, think tau crisis or stealthsuits.

    Total: 200pts
    Heavy Support
Soul Grinder of Chaos – Distrust – 160pts
    Phlegm
I aim to mostly use my SG for meq hunting. For example hopefully landing a nice phlegm round right on top of that devistator squad with those four plasma cannons just waiting to target my nicely bunched deepstriking units. Due to his purpose i'd imagine he'll be involved in the first wave, however I'm rather worried he may attract a lot of attention this way and not live to make up his point cost.

Daemon Prince of Chaos – Spite – 165pts
    Daemonic Gifts:
    Mark of Tzeentch
    Master of Sorcery
    Daemonic Gaze
    Breath of Chaos
He'll be deployed in the second wave, if the plaguebearers are still up when he becomes available he'll focus on them, otherwise another icon near the enemy lines and then using the combo of DG/BoC with his master of sorcery hopefully cause a lot of damage to important units.

Daemon Prince of Chaos – Hatred – 175pts
    Daemonic Gifts:
    Mark of Khorne
    Daemonic Flight
    Unholy Might
This bloke is my answer to the AV 13/14 vehicles, i figure at str6 as a monsterous creature he should be able to cause decent damage. And otherwise i'll turn him on tough expensive units like terminators etc.

    Total: 500pts
    Grand total 2003/2000 pts
Anyway thats my list that I've thrown together over the last 40 minutes or so at 11pm and after 7 hours of exams, so go go constructive criticsm, or mindless abuse of my nubness, either's good

HQ: First HoT is not a good place for an icon. He would die if charged in combat and 5 wounds isn't enough. Make both heralds have chariot, legion, Master of sorcery and bolt for 110 points each. They fly around shooting vehicles with bolt and infantry with gaze.
Your icons are better in troop choices for the extra bodies. One of your horror units would be ideal but also bloodcrushers due to the toughness and good armour.

Elites: Drop flamers to 2 units of 3 as it is difficult to get more templates to hit the target on the turn you deepstrike and they tend to be suicide units anyway. Increase the crushers by 1 or 2 and put an icon here.

Troops: Good. Get the changeling for one horror unit as he is well worth the tiny points cost.

Fast: OK Maybe drop a screamer or two if you need a few more points.

Heavy: having only one soulgrinder just gives enemy lascannon something to shoot at. either have 3 of them or 3 princes.

MoT prince doesn't need sorcery as monsterous creatures can fire 2 weapons anyway.

MoK prince is ok but a bit vulnerable. Adding Iron hide could help but then considder just replacing it for a Bloodthirster.

Mad covered my thoughts pretty well.

I would prlly put BoC on both my heralds because it's oh so nice to drop some flamer templates. Dunno on the icon there, then again I never run with icons. I would rather have the 50+ points that most people use for more troops or upgrades.

The khone prince is well...just chnage him to nurgle or tzeentch or at the very least give him hide at which point you may just want to get that BT as mentioned.

I don't think you need 3x DP or 3x SG having 3 in there of some mix makes sense. If you could have 2x SG and 1x DP then they have to split their AT fire on the SGs which was the point about lascannons.

Okay after taking into consideration your comments i really took another look at the KDP and well... he costs less than a bloodthirster but he can't fulfil his tank hunting role that well. So i scraped up the points by fiddling a few things around and came out with him instead.
Out of curiousity though, have you found hounds/seekers of slaanesh to be overly useful? I'm considering taking out my hounds if they're not overly effective to give me another 120pts to play with, which would mean i can chuck in another bloodcrusher or two and also give the plaguebearers unit with the icon a bit more manpower so it can better weather the storm of incoming fire which I'd assume they'd likely be taking as they'll come down first turn.
Finally the Soul Grinder I'm thinking about switching him for either another TDP of the same makeup as the other one or possibly scrapping both in favour of more troops and bulking out the bloodcrushers so that they can survive better and cause more damage. I'm thinking of bringing in a nice squad of bloodletters however I'm wondering then if they may overlap with my daemonettes. I've already got a squad of 8 of the old style metal models with axes from my khornate marine days. So possibly either adding on the bloodletters or replacing the daemonettes with bloodletters and bringing in a third squad of pink horrors.
Anyway at the moment this is mostly all conjecturesemi-mathhammering because I've yet to play them. I'll be playing a few proxy games in about a week so I can understand better how to play CD and what works with what and what doesn't.
So second round I guess. Better? Worse?

I like it better, I am still a fan of BoC vs BoT on the heralds and no need for WaL then either.

I think at this point I would try out the list for a few games and then adjust, proxy if you can before buying if you don't wanna be out $$.

BoC on Heralds means they have to get close and always get charged by any survivours just to pin them in combat and prevent the shooting happening again. Using gaze means they fly around at medium to long range and lay down plenty of firepower.

BoC is better on daemon princes but you have plenty of flamers of Tzeentch so you are not short of flame templates by any means.
