Hello! This is my first Warhammer 40k Army List, and it's a 500 points border patrol list (hence no HQ). I understand it's a slim list, but all comments are greatly appreciated! I've never actually played a game so I'm not too sure what's good and what is not.
10 Chaos Space Marines - 200 points
including 2 Plasma Guns and Aspiring Champion with Meltabombs
5 Chaos Space Marines - 80 points
including Aspiring Champion
5 Possessed Chaos Space Marines - 220 points
including Mark of Khorne, Aspiring Champion and Dedicated Transport Rhino with Extra Armour
People in my club aren't generally known to play vehicles or heavy-armour things in border patrol, hence no real heavy hitters like Power Fists.
I figured it'd be a solid list with 15 marines, solid troops with good firepower, and a rhino that transports my 5 Possessed close to whatever I want to lock in close combat/is vulnerable to melee.
I was wondering if this is a good list for some early games, and if not, what changes you would recommend.
For reference, a list of the models that are available to me;
1x Chaos Terminator Lord
31x Chaos Space Marine
8x Khorne Berserker
5x Chaos Space Marine Possessed
For those not familiar with Border Patrol, these are the associated rules:
- Armies are no more than 500 points
- You must have two Troops choices
- You may have one HQ choice but no more than one
- You may spend the remaining points from anywhere in the Codex
- No Special Characters
- No 2+ saves
- No models with more than 2 wounds
- No vehicles with a Total Armour value of greater that 33. This is calculated by adding the Front, Side and Rear armour numbers. (only count the Side once)
- No Ordnance weapons
- No specialist Army Lists
- Games at the School League Finals will be played using one of the Scenarios in this pack
- Patrol Clash games should, ideally be played on a 4’ x 4’ area
The only thing i'd be concerned with is the 5 man possessed squad, they are fairly expensive models for limited return, yes giving them a rhino helps with mobility into close combat, but for points return they are lacking with them only really being effective if you roll a 6 on the abilities table.
I'd be more inclined to take a squad of Khorne Berserkers with a rhino for similar points, they are a guaranteed unit in close combat.
I'd go with:
8 Berserkers - 168 Points
+ Rhino + 35 Points
Total: 203 Points
10 CSM - 150 Points
2 Meltaguns + 20
Total: 170 Points
5 Chosen Marines - 90 Points
2 Melta Guns 20 Points
+ Asp Champ w. Melta Bombs 15
Use the rhino to get the Berserkers to engage in combat quickly, your looking at 32 attacks on the charge with I 5 S 5, so they are gonna hit hard.
You can't go wrong with regular marines, and the two melta guns helps with some AT or possible instant death on powerful units.
Chosen marines can outflank and can be used in mainly an AT fashion if people do field anything.
The last two points being considered both the chosen and regular marines will still put out some decent fire power and can definately hold their own in close combat.
All criteria are satisfied and your pretty balanced.
Thanks for the feedback! I like your suggestions - I personally like Berserkers better as well, someone else suggested Possessed, but I'll save those for later.
The list as I have it now, is:
10 Chaos Space Marines - 170 points
+ 2x Meltagun
8 Khorne Berserkers - 203 points
+ Dedicated Rhino Transport
5 Chosen Chaos Space Marines - 125 points
+ Aspiring Champion with Meltabombs
+ 2x Meltagun
Total: 498 points
That second list will do well at a 500pt game, nothing much needs changing.
