I'm a Fantasy Player so I'm new to 40K. I have recently acquired (bulk) a Chaos Space Marines army. I'm told it is more than enough to get going and join the league that is just starting. Roughly I have:
20 Standard Chaos Space Marines
30-35 Khorne Beserkers
1 Chaos Lord in Terminator Armor
1 Chaos Land Raider
*And a couple of odd individual Marines with the Rocket Launchers or other Heavy Weapon type thing.
All of these models are new and I've been assembling them all, reading the rules to learn the differences from Fantasy to 40K, and trying to get and idea of the various forces I should muster for different point value encounters. Obviously I only have one HQ choice so far but he seems solid enough. Can I get some feedback on what kinds of lists I could build from this lot in the following groupings?
500, 750, and 1000? Obviously larger grouping would just field pretty much everything.
Well quite honestly you have a lot more than 1000 there. But once you know your point cost post the rough estimate. From there changes are made easier. Generally in 40k 1500 or 2000 is a good sized force to play with.
It is harder for me to build the small lists right now than the larger ones. The larger lists, which come later in the league, will likely just be me fielding everything I have. At this smaller start, however, I have to select the better stuff. My unfamiliarity with the game makes it harder for me to decide what is truly better and what isn't.
Clearly HQ choice will be the Chaos Lord. Then I have have decide whether to bulk the initial list with all Beserkers or split them up with regular Chaos Space Marines (in theory so I can get some HW guys in the squad). Clearly I will use both Rhinos regardless. Then I have to figure out how to spend the remaining points given all the options.
For the 500p list I would field (assuming no models with more than 2 wounds, armour save of 2+, and total armour of vehicles not above 32/33 allowed) one 9 man squad of khorne berzerkers, with Skull Champion with Power Weopon in a Rhino (254) and another regular marine squad (10 marines) with Aspiring Champion with Power Fist, 2 Melta Guns and a Rhino (245).
For 750p list I would add one man to the berzerker squad, and change the power sword to a power fist, and put in a chaos lord with mark of slaanesh and slaanesh daemon weopon. With the remaining points you can also put on a Nurgle Icon on the 10 Man CSM squad and with any remaining points put some extras on the rhinos like combi-meltas.
For the 1000p list I would add the defiler and maybe a squad of 5 raptors with 2 melta guns and a champ with PF. So make take the 500p list add the 150 from the defiler, make a 150 point HQ (MoS, Blissgiver, Terminator Armour) and put in a 200p squad of raptors. If you can, I would rather use a normal chaos lord (not terminator) with wings and run him with the raptors.
This is just off the top of my head, I don't have the codex with me so sorry for the generalisation and any mistakes with the point costs.

No no no no no no!
I know it is small points but always keep the berserkers with fists. This will keep you prepared for bigger lists as well. Power weapons are a waste. The whole reason you take a power fist is to be able to hit hard against anything! Even if you don't need to use it in the 500 it will prevent any problems in the 1000 and up! I would do an 8 man squad but that is fluff stuff. Give the CSM a melta sure but also a plasma. Two meltas is major overkill!
Why not give the lord mark of khorne. The slanesh is cheesey. Besides the bloodfeeder is amazing!!!! Don'tbother with a mark on the CSM it only affects the champion. Unless you want fluff, then go with MoK.
I agree with the defiler but no the raptors. What a waste of points for such a small unit! Take another troop choice like berserkers with rhinos, or even terminators for the same points. Raptors are useless in such a small battle. If you want to get across the board so bad deep-strike your terminators. Raptors get taken down quick as they are huge fire magnets. Chaos lords are best in terminator armor. but that is imo. I don't understand why there is all this god mixing and matching! If you want to play black legion that's one thing but try to play one god. They all have their strengths!!!
