Apologies in advance for the length of this post; feel free to skip to the crunch if you want. Here goes:
So I love the fluff and I'm starting my first army. I want a fluff-appropriate army, but I also want a chance at winning.
In the end I decided to go with a joint Thousand Sons/Alpha Legion force, the Sons because I love them and the Alphas for their sneakiness and wider selection of fluff-appropriate units.
My story concept is that my warband's leader, Tyjec'Amun (natch), is out to cause the greatest change in ten thousand years--by tearing the Emperor out of the Golden Throne.
He doesn't know whether the Emperor will die or reincarnate, but it doesn't matter since all he wants is to devastate the status quo. He'd also like to gather the Sons back into being a proper Legion; he hates the sellouts who've joined the Black Legion or become mercenaries.
Ideally Magnus would get off his butt and lead the Sons, but barring that Tyjec'Amun will lead them himself (though he has a healthy respect for Arhiman).
Along the way, this tiny warband has hired some Alpha Legion mercenaries to assist them, though being Alphas they have their own plans...
The Sons are providing my Troops and one HQ, plus armor (if I field any), while the Alphas are providing HQ #2 and some specialists.
I'm figuring the Alphas will take the enemy's armor and hurt their troops while the Sons mop up the stragglers, though I might have trouble with hordes.
I have two builds I'm tossing around, with a cap of 1500 points; let me know what looks better, and if you have suggestions for improvements I'm all ears.
HQ - Daemon Prince with wings, Mark of Tzeentch, Warptime, and Bolt of Change AND Chaos Lord with plasma pistol, melta bombs, personal icon, and jump pack.
Elites - 4 Terminator Champions; one with heavy flamer and chainfist and the rest with 2x lightning claws
Troops - Two squads, each consisting of eight Thousand Sons Rubric Marines, an Aspiring Sorcerer with Bolt of Change, and a Rhino with a dozer blade and daemonic possession.
Heavy Support - Predator with lascannon sponsons, dozer blade, and extra armor.
Fast Attack - Five raptors, one with a plasma gun.
*The plan here is to rush the enemy with the Prince, Lord, and raptors, teleporting the Termies in once the Lord gets close enough. Meanwhile the armor advances, blazing away, and the Rhinos drop the Sons off at prime firing distance.
HQ - Sorcerer with Terminator kit, combi-flamer, MoT, warptime, and Bolt of Change AND Lord with Termie kit and combi-flamer
Elites - Two squads of 5 Chosen each, with 5 meltas (if I'm reading their entry right it looks like "one may take a melta" and later on "up to four others may take a melta") and the Icon of Chaos Glory AND one squad of 7 Terminator Champions, one with a heavy flamer, one no-frills, and the other five with double lightning claws.
Troops - Two squads, each consisiting of eight Rubrics, an aspiring sorcerer, and Bolt of Change
*Similar plan; infiltrate with the Chosen then 'port the Termies and Lord in on their IoCG. While the Chosen melt tanks and the Termiesand Lord eat infantry, slog the Sorcerer and the Rubrics up the field, guns blazing.
So, what do you lot think?
Just realized there was a section for army lists--sorry about that!
