I haven't yet committed to 40k, but seeing all those fancy cars driving around makes me want to try it! I'm torn between a few armies, but this is what I'm thinking for the Chaos Marines. Any thoughts no the list, or at least if I'm on the right track would be swell! My other thoughts are Traitor Guard or Necrons. >: )
I'm a fantasy player (kind of), so all the equipment is certainly new!
Dual Lightning Claws
Chaos Marines x10
Champion with P Fist, Plasma Gun, Melta Gun
Chaos Marines x10
Champion with P Fist, Plasma Gun, Melta Gun
Chaos Raptors x10
Champion with Dual Lightning Claws, Flamers
Obliterator Cult x3
I think this gives me a few options to take care of different troop types, along with a fast unit type to get where I need 'em, and the obliterators to use as needed.
Power Fists and Lightning Claws sound neat! Am I wrong?
I'm not sure about a theme yet, but I was thinking of doing Dark Wolves, just Renegades, or maybe even a specific god.
Thanks for your time!,
First thing everyone is going to say is dont mix your special weapons, 1 squad should have 2 melta the other should have 2 plasma.
Raptors are not worth their points, i like the models but have stopped using them as they were never effective enough. Drop them and get 2 rhinos for your squads.
Your lord is great but is not going to do much with his lighning claws foot slogging. Use the extra points to either upgrade to a deamon prince with wings, or give your lord wings or a bike.
Give your troops mark of chaos glory so they are not so easy to run away and also dont have to take wounds for being fearless.
At this point you should have some extra points, i would drop 1 oblitorator and take a squad of 5 havocs with 4 autocannons and MoCG. That is a personal preference others might say take 2 more obliterators or a predator or a defiler... the options are out there.
Neato! Thanks a lot. I'll stick with one weapon type per squad. Are the squad big enough? I'm used to larger unit sizes from fantasy, so 10 or less feels alien!
With double claws, can I still have an upgraded range weapon or do they take up both slots?
Is a lord strong enough to fly around on his own, or would he be better with the unit of (not so good) raptors, if I give him wings?
At this point level would oblit's be worthwhile, or should I transform their points into havocs and maybe towards a dreadnaught or other tanky type thing?
I'm tempted to use summoned greater daemons, but I may wait for a higher point level.
Thanks for the tips! Sounds snazy!
10 is a good number for a squad as thats what fits in our Rhinos, and its the magic # to get 2 special weapons.
No, a lord is not strong enought to fly around on his own i would hide him behind a rhino and have him attack with that squad, or use him to tie up a small squad until your marines get there. Yes he can have a pistol or Combi-weapon, most ask how they would use it... i am still in question of that myself unless you mod a claw to be similar to Abaddon's claw with a combi-bolter on it.
Oblits are good at every level that they can be afforded. They are expensive as a solitary unit but their flexablity is unmatched, so they are worth the points. Taking a solitary tank makes it a huge target especially in small size game with minimal targets. Everyone loves Oblits, i like havocs over tanks b/c they can hide and pick ppl off, 1 lucky shot can destroy a predator, you need more shots to kill a havoc squad if built correctly. by correctly i mean atleast 1extra guy for each special weapon, so 4 autocannons should be in a squad of 8. This way if 2-3 guys are removed due to small arms fire you still have your expensive guns left. In smaller games its not as important to follow this rule but when you have the points do it.
I would have to agree with your idea to wait on the GD, 100 pts for him plus 30pts for a champoin to sac... and if you upgraded that champ then it costs even more... the best way i have seen to use a GD is to take a bike squad with champ and race them to the other side and summon.

I'll definitely consider your advice while I make my decision!
I've tinkered with the list some more, taking the suggestion and also deciding to stick with an undivided renegade force (at least, I think), instead of going with a heavily themed mono-god army. I was thinking of going Dark Wolves or one of the other chapters featured in the side bar. Not quite sure yet.
The list is similar to the one above, except I've added meltabombs to the meltagun chaos marine unit, and did not split the special weapons up.
The main change is:
Termi Armour, Dual Lightning Claws
Icon of Chaos Glory, Lightning Claws x2, Heavy Flamer, Chainfist
The chaos lord hangs with the termies, hopefully deep striking together into melee range, while the oblits blast at stuff and the chaos marines take objectives and what not. The equipment is split so I have three termies with special weapons.
Any chance of this working out?
If your planning on Runing that squad make sure your troop squads have a personal icon so you wont have to scatter your expensive Terminators off the table. Be prepaired for the termies to take alot of shooting after they hit the table, bc you cant move or assult in the same turn as you deep strike. If you have the points Icon of Tzeentch to give them a 4++ invulnerable so they can last to get into CC.
I gave the marines chaos glory, but I've been thinking and you confirmed that they should have the personal icon.
Does this force seem effective, or should I look towards something else to take up the termies spot? They seem damn expensive in points and monies.
I've been looking at getting the battleforce, but I don't know how useful possessed are, and kind of wanted a fully undivided army so I'm not sure how much use I'd have out of the berzerkers!
Possessed are good for 1 thing bits.... Termies have their place, most people use them to DS and use combi melta as Termicide, just a sacrificial unit of 3. If your planning on getting a battle force the Berzerkers are also a good replacement for the termies. I would start with the battle force and just proxy terminators to see if you like how they play. Play test is the only way to know if your list works, you could copy some1s list from here that has never lost and never get a win with it, it’s all about how you play. If you prefer to sit back and shoot or want to be a CC army, or an all around army. Standard CSM and Berzerkers make it into just about every list so it’s a good place to start. build up from there, but I recommend to proxy first buy later, I have sunk more money into 40k then I ever wanted to b/c I bought stuff that sounded good but never worked on the battlefield. Tell you the truth I had berzerkers I never built from my old battle force bc the old codex had the legions, and my army could not worship a god... I regret that decision, now that they are built and on the table my game has improved.
Bottom line start small and try new things with proxy before you dump your hard earned $$ on anything. My bro in-law has sunk mony into 4-5 armies bc he played a game with a list he thought would be good but lost 2-3 games and instead of trying something new with that army he just moved on... unless you have that kinda $$ then start small and proxy.
That's the best advice yet.
Considering I had three 3kish Warhammer Fantasy armies before playing a game...maybe I should scale back a bit. :p
Much appreciated! I'll look at the battleforce and suck it up and try a few games with that stuff.
