I'm new to CSM (and 40k for that matter), but in my lurking I've seen a reoccurring theme of "Kinda a bland, old book, but has a few lists that work." Now I know we're expecting an update in the (hopefully) semi-near future, but I'd like to know the template for a decently competitive list, or examples of "the few lists that work." I'm not looking to run a competitive tournament circuit or anything, but I enjoy my games more when I'm not getting brutally massacred. You can be as detailed or precise as you want cause as I said, I'm a noob when it comes to 40k.
I'm much more of a WHFB nerd at heart, but Chaos beckons in the sci-fi realm too so I figured I'd try my hand at 40k in anticipation of the new edition and update we'll be getting. Also, ideal game sizes would be good too. As of right now, I can maybe max out at 1000 points, but if you want to give me a smaller or larger scope that's fine too.
Thanks in advance for your input!
The most competitive choices in the codex would be:
Daemon Princes with wings and lash
Abbadon(over 2k points only)
3xTermies with combi-meltas, heavy flamer/chainfist to suicide DS
5x Plague Marines with 2 meltas in a rhino
8x Berzerkers with a fist in a rhino or LR(if abbadon is in the list)
10x CSM with fist and 2x Meltas in a rhino
Obliterators(the more the merrier!)
Defiler, +1 or +2 CCW
Vindicator with possession
Pick and choose and good luck!
win some, lose some
That's exactly what I wanted. Thank you!
On another note, what marks do you recommend?

As a standard I give my basic CSM squads Mark of Chaos glory to reroll leadership tests, terminators I don't bother with a mark, Plauge Marines and Berzerkers are already dedicated to a god and Daemon Princes you have to take Mark of Slaneesh so that you have access to the Lash ability.
Another unit worth looking at is Plague Marines with Plasmas, a 3+ Save then Feel no pain (4+ save if you fail your armour) laughs at the "Gets Hot" rule all day long.
Game sizes - In 500 points you will likely only get your mandatory two Troops and a HQ.
I pretty much agree with Arjuna
Prince with MoS, Wings, Lash - which is not as good as it used to be but still worth a go. The only downside to this is the vast amount of anti-psy that appears in enemy armies.
Lord: Wings, Deamon Weapon, Melta Bombs - he can still ride in vehicles (see the FAQ).
Terminators in 3s and 4s are too easy to kill, and therefore give your enemy easy Kill Points. Also the Mark of Slaanesh works very well for guys armed with Power Weapons. Try to field one Chain Fist too. Combi-weapons are well worth thier point. Example unit: 5 Terminators: MoS, 1x ChainF, 1x Heavy Flamer, 4x Combi-Meltas.
Terminators can work very well with a Landraider with Dozer and Daemonic Possession + a Sorcerer with MoS and Lash of Submission (uses Lash once you dismount from the raider to bring the enemy close enough for the Terminators+Sorcerer to Assault)
10 CSM: IoCG, 2x Melatguns or 2x Plasmaguns, Aspiring with Power Fist, Rhino (perferably with extra Bolter and dozer)
5 Plague marines: 2x Meltaguns, Rhino (perferably with extra Bolter and dozer)
5 Plague marines: 2x Plasmaguns, Rhino with Havoc Launcher (and dozer) - use this unit to hold Objectives near or in your deployment zone
8-10 Berzerkers: Aspiring with Power Fist, (perferably with extra Bolter and dozer)
Exactly what everyone else says.. Raptors are nice, but.. in 5th ed' you need Troops more.
Landraider with Dozer and Daemonic Possession - great for carrying Berzerkers (even better when you add a Sorcerer with MoS and Lash of Submission)
Obliterators - lots!
Defilers - they die too fast for me, but most Chaos players love 'em
Vindicator with Daemonic Possession

3 bikers with 2 meltaguns can still be used as an anti-vehicle squad due to their mobility.
Their krak grenades also offer a "last chance" in an assault against a vehicle if their meltas happen to fail and the vehicle needs to be destroyed.
The only possible use I can see for Fast Attack are Raptors, and then the only really competitive way to use them is as a bodyguard for a Lord with wings. Typical build for that seems to be a Lord with Mark of Khorne and dual Lightning Claws, and give the Raptors the Mark of Slaanesh. Keep the Raptors around 5 or so, then you have a pretty fast and hard-hitting unit that can launch a lot of attacks before the enemy can even attack back (unless you're attack Eldar or something).
