Here is my new IW list. I started with a rubbish army for this campaign that me and my friends are doing at the moment and I couldn't change my legion so I just went for a very different style of IW.
HQ - lord with d.strength, flight and twin lightning claws (I'm using the raptor aspiring champion model) - 120
Elites - 1 obliterator - 70
7 possesed with d. talons, aspiring champion with power weapon and bolt pistol - 215
Troops - 5 chaos space marines with lascannon + plasma gun - 105
5 chaos space marines with lascannon and plasma gun - 105
Fast Attack - 5 raptors with flamer, all with furious charge - 191
Heavy support - Land raider - 250
The HQ will need an Inv.save to survive.
The Possessed squad has the Talons upgrade, this includes the Champ, so he cannot change this for the Powerweapon/Bp combo. Either drop the Champ or get another Gift for them.
This is an army very unlike what I would field in a 1000pt game. You have some very expensive units that I think will be very hard to get to do what they should. They are very vulnerable to most things the enemy can do to you. I would recommend you to rethink.
You could infiltrate the HQ and Raptors to get them where you want them.
Should I drop the possesed to five? I have been thinking that they are too expensive for 1000 pts. That wold give me enough points to infiltrate the raptors and lord, and possibly give him an inv. save. I could also take off the champion, he's a bit useless if he can't use the power weapon. All the other mutations are, in my opinion, either too expensive or rubbish.
Or I could get rid of them completely, the first game I played with this army they got burnt to shreds by grey knights' flamers (or is that just because it was GK vs. things that count as daemons)? I think they aren't manouverable enough after that game; they did nothing for the whole game even though they had the speed of a land raider to help!
Also, is a land raider a bit cheesy for 1000 pts?
I do not use the word "cheesy" as I don't think it's a bad thing to field a good army. I leave this for others.
Though I think it's way to expensive for a game this small. It's 25% of your points. There is so much more you could do for these points in your list.
The same goes for the Lord, I would not use a Lord in a 1000pt game either, this is IMO a battle for a Lt. The Possessed are also a bit over the top expensive.
Nothing wrong with them really, if I were to make an IW armmy I'd most certainly have a unit of possessed with Talons, but I would not field it unless the battle were around 2000pt.
If you are trying for an assault-oriented IW-list, a nice idea by the way, I think you could get a much better army if you kept the units a bit cheaper and tried to look past the stats of the units.
A good assault-unit would be maybe 8 CSMs with BP, CCW and a champion with powerfist. You could always give them a meltagun or two and infiltrate them.
For HS I'd go for the Vindicator. Its limited range would not be a problem on a 4x4 board.
Gotta go now, but I'll be back.
I think a Landraider is really too much for a 1000 pt game. Its literally a quarter of your points, and a lucky lascannon shot or a well placed melta shot will rip it in half. I would agree with Andu, as your Iron Warriors you should consider a Vindicator for its points cost, and considering you'll be playing on a small table for a 1000 pt game its range will not hinder you.
I play IW and I love my raptors, as they add a lot of flexibility to your army. however in a 1000 pt game, they do suck up a lot of points, and a casualty or 2 could cause a morale check. I don't see your flamer being all that effective, that's just from personal experience, unless your playing against orks, guard, or nids consistently. If you are using them as a delivery force for your lord i would agree inflitrate would help greatly. However, will rack up the cost quickly.
Your aspiring champion on your possessed cannot have a power weapon or a bolt pistol. re-read the rules for daemonic talons, they count as the only weapon the models can have. Also if your possessed are running across the battlefield they won't last long unless they have the mark of khorne (which you can't have) or a rhino to move 12 pop smoke and drop them somewhere on the 2nd turn.
You seem to like assaulting, consider Andu's recommendation for the regular CSM CC squad. In addition, consider going all marines with some inflitrating havocs to tie the opponent up while your units get into CC. The 5 man IW squads are nice for the army theme, however some lucky wounds sends them running away. Marines and oblits are a staple point for IW armies, having 3 obliterators each taking up 1 elite slot is much better than having 1 landraider in a 1000 pt game. They have more versatility and provide BETTER fire power and options. Vs Grey Knights I'm not sure the possessed are effected by their special weapons. I don't have my book in front of me, but if the unit entry says chaos space marine they wouldn't be effected. However, GK can pump out a lot weapons shots on the move like psycannons and will roll over possessed and outnumber them most of the time.

40K-Beakies(9-14-4),Guard(4-7-2),Orks(34-12-11). FANTASY-Dwarves(15-6-7),Beasts (14-14-1), Skaven (17-17-10) DoC (6-1-2). CYGNAR (28-15-1)
I think the Land Raider might be a good choice. For 2 reasons - One - My experience has been that 90% of 1,000 point armies are built thinking the opponent won't bring something as big, or as well armored as a Land Raider, so they don't think to put in enough anti-vehicle to deal with it. I think it will do much better in a smaller game like this than in say, a 2,000 point game where people tend to stock up on anti-vehicle weaponry. Two - Fluffwise, Iron Warriors are big on heavy support and heavy fire power. Spending a quarter of your total points on Heavy Support seems to fit with this theme rather well.
Finally, I want to say good job. I always like to see armies that break the mold while keeping with the army's strengths. I've been telling people for ages that Iron Warriors could make a vicious melee focused army but they always looked at me like I was crazy. Your basic troops are standard IW fare, but I like the Raptors, the Possessed and the Lord.
If I played IW, I'd use 4 close combat specced dreadnoughts, a few obliterators and basic troop squads with lascannons, and a close-combat squad of either possessed or basic marines in a rhino. Finally, I'd probably go with a statured prince and bikes, though raptors are cool too. Maybe I'll have to build this army one day.
I disagree, visage is 2 points a model and i suggestewd for my bro's khorne possessed and they have been doing great. Minus 2 leadership checks is awesome. Also just follow andu's advice, it is right on.Originally Posted by pro_necron
I agree. Daemonic Visage is my favorite upgrade for possessed. It's cheap, and Possessed are pretty tough as is, so they don't really need any of the upgrades, Visage is just a nice little extra. Actually, Visage is probably the only upgrade I really like on Possessed. Talons is cool, but prevents the champion from having a power weapon or fist.
exactly, and you definetely want a fist on the champ, strength 10 anyone?
Actually, I think he'd be Strength 9. As per the Chaos FAQ, bonuses are added after doublings, so his strength would double, then get +1 for 9. Strength 10 is for Dreadnoughts and Slaaneshi Daemon Princes only, I'm afraid.... although, I think an IW Statured Prince could take a servo arm, which would be Strength 10.
