When i paint my blood letters i use mechrite red as a base coat followed with a wash of baal red. Once that dry i hit all the crevices and scale like bumps with devlan mud. Depending on how dark you want the shading to be i either add more devlan mud or just go straight in to highlighting.

Those color choices seem perfectly fine to me, but it all ultimately depends on how much area you consider highlights to cover. Sometimes I like to go a little brighter than usual on the wider areas so that the shades balance out when I apply inks. Whenever I paint bloodletters I can never be too far away from my red ink. A lot of people using the inks for the glossed look end up applying it too late to the model and entire surfaces end up being completely shiny. I would say that if you are planning on achieving this look that you start figuring it out now while you are in your initial stages.
