I would normally say a defiler, as I have enough meltas I think to deal damage to most any tanks but an army that is so high in tanks like IG is overwhelming. I'd go with obliterators and aim to strike close for the best multi melta shot you can!

I agree with that, the obliterators will also survive longer against the guards as they can make better use of cover. That said I would suggest in trying to get them behind his tanks were they can do even more damage, also don't forget to assault with the obliterators should a tank be in range, they also carry powerfists.

yeah, the more i think about it the more use i think they would be. The defilers look cool but get blown up by the end of turn 1 (turn 2 if im lucky) and dont do much after that lol. As its Guard i tend to have flamers on my troops to do maximum damage, so if i could get at the tanks up close and at a distance that would be a great advantage

2 Defilers UNLESS you play an aggressive Mech army with Icons. Defilers aren't amazing against armor unless they assault but DS Meltas that don't scatter are big. Depends on the points/list but Defilers usually, especially if you're packing Meltas already.

im going with obliterators. do well in nearly any situation HOWEVER do you have many rhinos and other vehicles? if so the definitly the defiler simply because it is a HUGE fire magnet plus against gaurd battlecannons are way killy!!! also have you considered havocs? not as versatile but sheaper and can have far more firepower. TLDR:havocs>obliterators>defiler>predator>?

Against IG sporting lots of tanks (in other words all of them) then I'd recommend Deep Striking teams of Obliterators behind the tank line. If they are operating as a unit, remember that shooting one of them shoots all of them - which means the hits get spread around and your extra "dud" hits aren't wasted. If you can, try to hit all the tanks at one time, that way they can't about face and destroy a lone unit of expensive Obliterators.

the only issue i would have is that he tends to put his tanks right on the board edge, usually on one side. the best i could do would be to go in front and then try and get around the other side
