KENDO!!! Thats friggin awesome! Kendo rocks! Man I envy you, good luck, that should be a load of fun.

Arcade Fire.... Nope. Never heard of them, and that's saying quite a bit since there are lots of bands that I've heard of but never actually heard, I havn't even heard of these people. What kind of music is it?

I borrowed the 'best of' crowded house from the library today (and a bunch of other things) but the disk was so badly scratched and damaged from overuse and carelessness that some of it was corrupt (other whole albums didn't work). You don't perchance have "Weather With You" do you?

I've heard there is this complete branch of music called 'power metal' which is sometimes called 'happy metal' by people who prefer bands with cookie monster vocals. It doesn't take itself seriously and has very cheesy, high fantasy lyrics and isn't anywhere near as heavy as it's name would suggest. It's supposed to have been heavily influenced by Iron Maiden (one of my favorite bands) and judas priest (growing on me) so I had high hopes for it. All I've heard is dragonforce and they're a complete joke, they sound a bit like maiden and priest but sped up 10-20 times and with really annoying nintendo game type noises, I'm hoping the rest of the genre has more to offer.

Does anyone here still play 40k? I've heard a lot of people are leaving it, myself and most of my friends included, some playing warmachine, some going to fantasy and never looking back. I'm glad since I've always thought that fantasy was infinitely superior in every concievable way (I can go on extra long rants about it) and the only reason I ever started 40k was to get more games because more people play 40k. I know some people with bizarre reasons for quiting 40k, one or two people are leaving 40k because they think the new dark angels are inherently cheesy and can't be made otherwise.

Triumph still goes to a 40k club every Thursday. I'm still settling into college but I'll play some games again soon (just starting tyranids once I get some money/job).

but yeah everyone seems to be leaving games-workshop in droves.

The Arcade Fire are pretty much indie, they're a band from Canada, and really quite excellent. ^_^ I'll send you a song on MSN sometime.

As for the 'best of Crowed House' (a really excellent collection) it does have 'Weather With You', and again over MSN, or anyother CH song you want. ^_^

    As for 40k...
I still have my WH army, and I want to do a small Eldar one (and I've got a small dwarf force for fantasy) but College takes so much time for me and combined with a gf, there's not much time for playing or painting. IF there were a local club I would go, but there's not. :"(

I play alot of Magic The Gathering now - its cheaper (60 cards for $20, boosters, I can buy individual cards), flexible (I can make tons of decks with my cards), and incredibly portable (I play it with my friends at lunch everyday, and I can just pack it in my bag). I still like 40k, and get WD everynow and then, but you know. Once I get a proper job, and am at Uni, I'll play it more I reckon.

A note: lots of people are leaving GW I reckon, because it is aming at lower and lower age groups, and guys like us find it tough. There's no-one my age to play with, and WD is getting more aimed a little kids, and the models are so expensive so that only little kid's parents can buy it for them.

    Alas for cash strapped students!

    Horray for Kendo!

About that arcade fire song that you sent me so generously, I've only given it one listen so far and I get the picture that I'd probably like the band if I'd given a whole album 3-4 listens but I don't really like it yet. Favorite parts of the song are the bits where he isn't singing With the Organ. But fear not, after 1 listen, I didn't like the album 'one hot minute' and now it's my second favorite chili peppers album, making it one of my all time favorites.

As for who can afford the hobby, it' not just the little kids because of their parents, but also other adults who are old enough to have kids but don't. So if you're between 10 and 12-13 or if you're 30+, you are fine, but anyone from 14-17 is in school so only has weekends to work for money and that time is often needed to do assignments and such. People 18-20 don't have the time for hobby they've got their jobs, maybe uni or tafe, possibly a girlfriend. People 21+ need the money from their jobs to play the rent, get to work, put food on the table, they probably have a girlfriend etc...

I think that only LoTR is specifically aimed at little kids from 10-13 and that 40k is more aimed for people of 12-16. I think fantasy seems to be aimed at people of the ages 15 or 16+, its much more satisfying as a game system and there is no one army or faction that GW cares about more than the others. It's more balanced in fluff and such. Like, in the storm of chaos campaign, Valten, the saviour of mankind with THE warhammer just gets stabbed by a skaven assassin and dies, Archaeon (FB abbaddon) gets shazaamed by an orc special character and such, whereas in 40k, even when IG win the campaign and space marines come 5 or 6th, the space marines get ALL the credit and they just say that the marines won it and the guard helped a little bit. Marines get updates all the time, they had 7 differnet librarian models already and they're getting 3 new plastic ones, they already had perfectly good devastator models and now they're getting plastic ones while the orks still have wartrucks that are suposed to hold 10 orks but can reaslistically only hold 3 and have you looked at the models for mandrakes and wyches recently? (Note that DE didn't get new models for medusa and nearly everyone else did).

    Play FB.

I live in a giant bucket.

Nope. I stopped wargaming mid-last year. I hadn't played 40k for about 6 months before that anyway. I played Warmachine for a while after that, it's a great game. I think I've grown out of wargaming now, although if I ever do get back into it, it'd be back into Warmachine. When I have some money...that's the main thing stopping me right now

Yes but also remember Teclis destroyed the entire daemon army with one spell, including Be'lakor. Mannfred spent the whole campaign marching his army to the gates, got there, looked at a priest then turned and went home. A bloodthirsty orc let his opponent (Archaon) live rather than collecting his trophy...

I heard that out of all GW sales, including WHFB, LOTR, 40k and specialist games Space marines make up nearly 50% of the sales, so they do kinda have a business reason for updating them all the time. That is an insane amount when you consider how many other armies there are for both 40k and WHFB.

My last 40k game was about half way through last year, its kinda fun but WHFB is soooo much better. My gaming group switched from 40k all the time to WHFB all the time just when 4th ed hit because none of us really liked it, and we haven't looked back.

    hobby

I think you'll find many people leave the hobby from about age 16 onwards, and it's a combination of things from no time to do the hobby to not wanting to be a nerd and point of riddicule anymore. 16/17 is the age the majority of people start partying, find booze and sex, and for some, drugs as well. Something that continues into late teens and early and mid 20's.

For mind I painted a little when I was 15 - 16, and used to play D&D and all that crap. Then one moring I didn't want to do it anymore - too nerdy for this nerd!!

Years 11 + 12 were spent with me studying and attending the occasional party, and University was a blast. It's only now that I have a disposable income and don't care about appearances, (especially after going to my high school reunion and seeing that the 'popular' kids didn't go anywhere and have a tribe of kids each) that i've gotten back into the hobby.

I still have the pressures of time when it comes to getting anything done but it's a hobby, and hobby's are what you do in your spare time.

For those who say it's too expensive, perhaps they should change focus. Yes, GW charges like a wounded bull BUT the focus could change from having mass armies to collecting and painting select miniatures. Perhaps these years could be used on focusing skills, especially painting, so that in years to come when your back off the bread line, you can get more out of the hobby.

    Just a thought.
