I've been playing a damn lot of SSBM lately. Thought there would be serious players on lo. why not eh?
Ok, this will be for SSBM discussion. Character matchups etc. Advanced techniques, such as wavedash, shffl ing, shield grab, jc, etc are also something to be discussed. Join if you know what the previous terms are.
If you wish to join, just state teh characters you main with.
So here goes.

I know that you said that it was about advance techniques - which I'm not so good at, as the game is relatively new to me, but I really like the game. My favourite characters are probably Fox and Falco (I'd choose Falco if I had to) because they are really agile and hard to kill (I also like annoying friends with their guns). The only problem is I keep on falling off the edge...

I'm a hardcore SSBM player. I've been mastering and then perfecting Link since it came out.
Of course, that means half hte characters in the game are statistically better than me!
The good news is: I'm really d4mn good.
I mean like I go to tourney's and get respect good.
I haven't hit anything like the big city, but local and non/local I've done it.
I fought the top 3rd player in Ohio and held my own, I didn't win, but he gave me props for doing so well with Link. I got 3rd in that tourney. I felt pretty good.
But yeah, I've been working on my shuffle game with Link, it's interesting...
More importantly though, my edge game has gone way up.
Also, I convinced my bro to start playing with Fox (one of the top 3 characters in the game) and he has helped me get way better. I still rock his face though. :yes:
But yeah, I'm awesome.
I know that sounds conceited and childish but I have come to this conclusion after beating many an opponent, not just the game or a few friends.
I couldn't beat someone like Ken or some of the people on Smashboards.com but I certainly wouldn't get pwned either. For right now, that's enough for me.
Oh, I always try to work on my Link game as I like being good enough to take on Top Tier characters, but as a SSBM veteran I can do well with all of the characters.
I dabble in Marth, Peach, Falco, Pikachu, Mario and Ganon in that order though.
Ness sometimes too, and Young Link for a nice change of pace to the Link game.

like to play with roy the most but i also use peach for fun
i use a very sofisticated tech. involving shield rolls, quick dodges, and speedy sword slashes, and it i know as kicking the crap out of every one i play

Hey I use marth mainly I'm best with him. Then close seconds are captain falcon and I dabble with ness and zelda.
My favorite trick is to charge people hit them in the air then smach when they land or if they start to catch on to my edge game and charge moves I throw in a counter every once in a while to shake things up.
It is hilarious how much that move pisses people off.
Um I am the best player I know but I have never competed or anything like that. So I guess i am not great just good enought to beat the heck out of my friends and cousins and their friends.
Anywho when I first got the game I wanted to use bowser but I found that it was to easy to get hit and his moves are have not distance and are slow. Did you guys have a similiear reaction.
Main characters used: Peach, Young Link, Samus, and Mr. Game and Watch
Favortie Items: Motion-Sensor Bomb, Bob-omb, pokeball, beam sword, super scope, bunny hood
I'm not a tournament-level player, but I have fun whenever I play SSBM. I'm better than most of my freinds, but could probably get owned pretty badly by someone who knew what they were doing. Oh and Ganondorf with the bunny hood is just hilarious. :ninja:

I wouldn't say I'm terrible at SSBM but I'm certainly not one for advanced techniques, never been to any tournaments or anything like that. I just play for fun, in any case, probably wouldn't last 5 minutes if I went to any majorly competitive events.

Favorite Items: Bob-om, Beam Sword, Hammer (A throwback to the good ol' days, I realise it's not that good anymore) - mainly my brother insists on not playing with items
In the first post you said something about advanced techniques, im not a "gamer" in this situation so does this me like being able to put up your shield at the exact second to reflect stuff and use the dodge effectively or are you talking about c stick smashing (I hate that)
When you shield as the exact moment of attack, a speical animation takes place that both reflects incoming range attacks and allows you to drop your shield "faster," this essentially means the shield animation is shortened to allow you to counterattack. This is generally regarded as "power shielding" or "perfect shielding" and the computer is excellent at it.
Human players find it somewhat impossible to use reliably but when it happens taking advantage of it is a sign of expertise.
Other techniques range from mid-experience to high to extremely advanced.
Things like efficient down-dodging, also known as "side-stepping," is very useful but can be overtaken by people aware of what you are trying to do. You push down and shield at the same time rather than to the side for the "roll."
Another one is "crouching." When you are attacked, "crouching" won't reduce the damage you take but will reduce the momentum, as well as keeping you closer to the ground to allow for a "tech," also known as a ground or wall recovery which occurs when you are taking damage and in a "flying" animation and you touch a surface while hitting shield at the precise moment of impact. This has it's drawbacks as well. By doing this, you are essentially imputting a "downward" directional influence.
A directional influence is something many people find hard to implement initially but it makes a lot of sense and if you want to be good you MUST master. Whenver you are hit by any attack, the direction you press during the strike will influence your trajectory. So if you are crouching, your directional influence is goign to send you "downward" more than if you hadn't been pressing anything. This can be a problem because crouching doesn't help you if the attack is strong enough or you are at a high percentage of damage and thus you will fly straight off the board or even downward, often times doing a debilitating down-air attack move leaving you helpless on the recover. I say this merely to balance out the advantage of crouching as many n00bs find it "unfair" that they don't have it mastered yet and find their attacks drastically ineffective. The most effective directional infuence is a 45 degree angle towards a "corner" of the stage, increasing the neccesary distance to KO your character. DIing is another of the essential skills to making a character that just won't die. Learn it, live it, love it.
Crouch-cancelling is also another technique much like "dash-dancing" and shield grabbing. It really isn't that advanced but it is something most people don't do. When running, you can "crouch" to cancel the run (which locks you into a running attack) in order to do a normal attack. Note, you can jump as well or even attempt to smash in the opposite direction. A technique I like to use is to merely walk in the opposite direction of my opponent adjusting my distance slightly and then smashing back in his/her direction. "Dash-dancing" is a technique in which you rapidly run in both direction making your character look very funny but randomizes/confuses a lesser opponent as it is harder to predict the characters movement and they can do a number of attacks from this "stance." Shield grabbing, as you said, consists solely of gaurding an incoming attack and relying on the lag-animation of the attack to allow you a free "grab." Note that in Super Smash Brothers, there is always a button that does the grab "for you." No doubt you have found this button unreliable a number of times. The reason is the grab command is a combo of both Shield and Attack. By utilizing your shield and Attack button rather than Z, you can drastically increase your reliablity not to mention input the grab command while in the defending animation.
Another advanced technique is called L-Cancelling although any shield button will do. Essentially treat any air attack as if you were being hit, teching as you "land." Try it out with Link's down A or Up A in the Air or any of Bowsers air attacks. When link or Bowser hit th ground you will see a rather long "landing animation" with loads of Attack-Lag. By "teching" (hitting shield at the moment of impact) you can cut this lag by half or more. This is the most essentialy technique to generate the ungodly speed you see in online smash videos done by pros.
Wave-Dashing on a regular basis while also applying its effects to a succesful defense/offense is a sign of veteran status. Wave Dashing consists of short-hopping (another technique in which you jump lightly to gain air attacks but minimize vulnerability, its so basic I didn't mention it because it's really just a control issue, practice) and then immediately air-dodging into the ground at a 45 degree angle. When done correctly your character will visibly do nothing but crouch and move either forward or backward in the direction you specified. This is a powerful defensive and offensive move because it allows you to do virtually any move in your repoitoire while providing a critical distance adjustment that does not require actual movement and doesn't turn your character around exposing your back.
Oh, and work on your edge game. If you can't put up a good fight off the edge you wil owned by anyone with a decent edge game which can be terrible players who focus solely on the edge game. If you want to play smash on a higher level, don't complain about anything and learn how to cheese everyone. Edge game is such an entirely different field it falls in the same line as simply knowing your character as each one has strengths, weakness, quirks and glitches. One quick tip I can offer is learning alternative recoveries. When you grab the edge you have several options to get back up like Jumping, Rolling, Standing, and two different attacks. The problem is all of these are incredibly predicatable and a good player will generally score a hit on you no matter what you select. By tapping down and hitting jump in a split second fashion, you can make what is essentially a "better" recover which you can vary with any of your own air attacks, this is much less predictable and takes a lot of control depending on the character you play. However, as not a lot of distance is gained, another good player can counter this as well. Basically, stay on the stage, and it you are off the stage, remain calm and think about what you are doing, don't just Up-B or waste all your jumps. The Edge-Game is one of the highest levels of smash to master and thus makes it one of the hardest.
