Hey I REALLY want to start a Deamonhunters/IG army, with a few SM models thrown in for a truely versatile Imperial army. I was looking for a mix of mostly DH with a squad or two of stormtroopers (Technically DH, but IG really), a marine assualt squad or two and a tactical support squad... how effective is this in 5th edition?

Welcome! And ... you're in luck! The new IG codex, new SM codex, and 5th edition has made the DH a very competitive army when you mix and match! You can make superb armies with IG/SM as base and allied DH, or DH as base with inducted IG.

Note that it is impossible to include SMs and IG in the same army list. It simply cannot be done. It's illegal no matter how you attempt it.

AND, you cannot include SMs in a DH army list that includes GKs. You can, however, make a base SM army and ally GKs into that.

Check out the DH links in my sig for discussions about making base DH armies. You can easily fit inducted IG units in there to replace some of the IST units and/or Inquisitors.

And as an example, here's an aggressive base IG list that I've created that lets me use allied GK units in a shooty/counterassault role.

HQ
[135 pts] CCS, 3 meltas; Chimera (hull HF)

Elite
[300 pts] 5 GKTs, 2 psycannons

Troops
[105 pts] PCS, 4 flamers; Chimera (hull HF)
[100 pts] + 2 Infantry Squads
[110 pts] + 2 Chimeras (hull HFs)
[155 pts] Veterans, 3 meltas; Chimera (hull HF)
[175 pts] 5 GKs, psycannon
[175 pts] 5 GKs, psycannon

Fast
[130 pts] Vendetta
[130 pts] Vendetta

Heavy
[165 pts] Demolisher
[165 pts] Demolisher
[150 pts] 2 Hydra Flak Batteries

Total: 1995

Put the cheapo infantry squads into the Vendettas to make them scoring and go have fun! All of the GKT/GK units borrow Platoon Chimeras so they're mounted. All of the GKs get to fire out the top hatch! That's a ton of S6 and S4 dakka....

That seems like a pretty fit list, but I would be more apt to doing a SM list with DH allies if those were my options. I like the 5th Edition Codex, and with an introduction of a DH Termi squad and maybe a stormtrooper or two, i think I have already written the fluff to make it so. Is there any reference I can get as to pages where i can read up on having DH allies? I have the DH Codex and main 40k 5th edition, 4th edition... 3rd edition... and 2nd edition now that i think of it... rulebook... and i would just like a quick idea where the rules/requirements are quoted because i'm having a hard time finding it!
