I thought I'd ask this question over here instead of in the 40k section. I'm sitting here with my new Daemons spearhead and I'm getting ready to break into it and start assembly.
The spearheads come with bases for 40k and Fantasy. My question is which bases would be best to use if I want to play both 40k and Fantasy with my Daemons?
To use both, square would be best as in fantasy you need to rank up and in 40K you don't so nothing is lost by having square bases in 40K. Though you could use round and just build movement trays to use durring fantasy games.
The only honorable options left to we combatants is seppuku or semantics...which amount to the same thing really.
use square as you need them for fantasy and in 40K square are allowed (look at flesh hounds). I do believe that 40K says you can use any bases size as long as it isnt smaller. square are slightly bigger. If anyone complains then poke them in the nose!

Use the square.
As people have mentioned the square bases are required for Warhammer Fantasy Battle. For 40k you can use whatever bases you like as long as they are not smaller than the bases that come with the model. The square bases as mentioned above are slightly larger than the circular ones.
I'm using circular, and making my own movement trays like the ones linked to above for regiments on foot, and then pinning and/or magnetizing everything that has larger bases.
Mainly because I like circular bases significantly more aesthetically.
As far as legal models go, making the bases interchangable is the best idea, as some models (Bloodcrushers, Beasts of Nurgle etc) are mounted on 50mm square bases for WFB, and 60mm round bases in 40k, so neither will work as a 'permanent' solution.

CAn you fit a 50mm square base on a 60mm round base? If so, then you can just put the square base on the round base for 40K games.

I'm sure GW had the foresight to see this sort of question pop up. It would have been nice if it was addressed either in a FAQ or in White Dwarf. I guess their official stance on the matter will be "Buy two of everything!"
Since I only pretend to know how to play Fantasy some of the rules I don't fully understand. Do you need to rank and file larger based models with smaller ones?
