Any standards you guys really like and would bring to the game everytime? I think the standard of sundering is great especially against armies where they roll 1 die (VC,OK etc.) - this forces them to roll 2 and "balances" out their magic phase a little.
Also about keeping the BSB alive... i know some people put them in a unit of nurgle and make it impossible to kill but that's a huge point sink. Is it "save" if I put my Tzeentch herald as a BSB with a unit of 10 horrors and just camp in the back? Or some general tactics about protecting the BSB?
The most common ones I've seen are sundering (mainly in khorne armies), despair (used together with the masque and a keeper of secrets for magic lds tests), and the stubborn one.
I think the best ways to protect the BSB are:
Khorne - juggernaut and obsidian armour; not much can get past a 0+ armour save, and the things that can are usually magic items, which are turned into normal hand weapons by his armour
Nurgle - not much is needed, but a palaqiun and noxios vapours can be helpfull to kill the attackers before they can hit him, maybe also the standard of sleeping decay ijn his unit to re-roll wounds
Tzeentch - some kind of flight, either winged horror, a disc, or a chariot. The chariot helps against shooting, but I would suggest wings just because if you take master of sorcery a lot more friendly spells can effect you, like pha's illuminum to make magic items used to attack him mundane ones, steed of shadows to get out of tough fights or away from things about to charge or shoot you, and bears anger so he can hold his own in a fight.
Slaanesh - probably a steed of slaanesh to keep you away from hard fights, daemonic robes can help but aren't needed, a torment blade would help against things like ogres, and if you are using the masque + banner of despair combo this can be very useful, and allure of slaanesh can be great. Siren song can be used to make a weaker opponent charge you so a stronger one can't.
Hope I hepled.
A standard which infers a -2 ld penalty for an army which causes fear is plain wrong
I love it
This weekend I have been experimenting with running a BSB with no banner. 25pts just for the reroll and the combat res is fantastic. I give it to a khrone herald on a jugger with armor of khorne.
what about Hellfire? Seems deadly with a decent magic phase and drawing out spell scrolls - or is it too overpriced?
I wouldn't call it overpriced for what it does. It can easily earn back it's points cost in one turn if you're smart with it
No, I don't have any wool.
It depends on what kind of magic you have. If you have stuff like Bolt of Tzeentch or Phantasmagoria, I'd use the standard first to eat Dispel Dice and instill fear. Then come in with the big daddy spell.
I like the Great Icon of Despair ==Myself==, but that's probably because I play Slaanesh heavy:vampire:. I like to run it on a flying Herald of Tzeentch to provide a moving bubble of Ld-rape that can hide behind everything else.
Close 2nd in the Standard of Sundering: relatively cheap and capable of shutting down magic phases by itself. Great for magic-lite or Khorne armies.

Hoy there ==ME== how are ye old chap? To be honest, I think that any of the standard combinations are a great combo, but the one that scares me most as a HE player is the -2 LD, as HE and Dwarves especially, pay a lot for the additonal pips of LD and if these are gone then we have a real issue defeating fear-causing enemies...
