It has been a while and I am thinking of getting some Screamers or Nurglings. They don't seem to get much coverage in army lists since they are mostly dominated by flesh hounds and flamers. I play with people who absolutely does not allow proxies and I am not sure if i should shell out some money for these units. I haven't seen anyone here playing with screamers (6 daemons players around here) and from their stats they die to any kind of shooting pretty fast - and also opponents can just "counter" them by placing non-blocking terrain around the middle to prevent screamers going in cover. Nurglings seems to be nice but doesn't seem to have much of a punch and bit expensive for what they do... Anyone have had any luck with these 2 units or should i just get a set of flesh hounds instead?
yeah, good question. I haven't used either yet, as you've mentioned, but it sounds kinda crappy that you're group doesn't allow proxies. Bad luck.
Anyway, If I can get a game in between my mad attempt at painting (prep for tourny), then I'll try to proxy some Screamers and see how they go. I don't really have any interest in Nurglings, coz they just won't suit my list. I'm more about getting stuck in, and Nurglings are there just to annoying the enemy (or tie them up if a Nurgling Infestation can get nearby)
Of course, there'll be no need if someone else responds who has used them
I've had good luck using Screamers to March-block opponents forcing them to slow down and letting my Flamers fire a bit more or getting mroe Magic Missiles off. Their fly-by attack is nice, but unless you have a huge unit you're only going to get a few kills, which is handy, but not game-changing usually.
If you have a shooting or magic-missile aspect to your army, Screamers are great to help them maximize their usefulness.
I've never run any Nurglings yet, so I can't say mush for them (but I'm constantly told how handy they are as speed-bumps and tar-pits).
arent screamers a bit expensive just march blocking? they really need to kill some elite guys to make them worth it... i think a unit that expensive should have at least 2W or 4+ ward...
I've never had the Screamers recover their points themselves, I don't actually think it's even possible. BUT, I have had them help other units recover the Screamers points for them. I'm all for using a sub-100 point unit to help a differnt unit get an extra 150 points in kills.
I'd be VERY careful moving these guys near elite units though. Even crappy units will demolish them in close combat (and skirmishers having 360 degree LOS can kill you easily too). Once these guys get in combat, they're over, but if you can get a 2-3 turns out of them before they die, in my experience, they've recovered their cost in support. Plus, if your opponent is spending a turn shooting them, yeah, they'll kill the Screamers (if they hit... they are skirmishers and harder to hit than normal), but it means they weren't shooting something else (and probably more threatening) that you have.
They certainly don't fit in every army, but when they do, they can really give an edge in messing with the enemies plans and buffing your shooting/magic.
I completely missed that your group doesn't allow proxies, that really sucks. I run Flesh Hounds as well as Screamers; but if I had to pick between them, I'd go with the Flesh Hounds in a second. Their hitting power is amazing in groups of 5+ and their charge range is so big, alot of players can accidently step into it without noticing.
Here's my 2250 army...
BT w/ fs,oa,if 550
2x herald mos,fly,tzeentch bsb sunder 395
blue scribes 81
2 x 10 horrors 240
~17 blood letters 180
2 x 5 hounds 350
2 x 6 flamers 420
I could remove 7 blood letters and put in 3 screamers.... suggestions?
It might be worth considering since it'd help soften enemies up for the BT and bolstering the Flamers shooting. That said, 17 Bloodletters help them soak up any shooting before they get in combat.
If proxying was an option, I'd play with that a bit to see what works well with how you play. If it were me, I'd probably drop the Obsidian Armour for AoK on the BT to use those points elsewhere... Maybe drop the Bloodletters to 15 and combine that savings there with the savings from the AoK to get some Screamers in.
You do have alot of shooting (my friends would kill me if I dropped 12 Flamers in a game ), and an extra phase or two of shooting would be handy to have.
is 2 units of 3 good or 1 unit fine for now?
I'd just go with 1 unit of 3, any more would probably be a waste of points.
I have a unit of 6 in my army and they do great taking out chariots, lone characters, skirmishers, and Chaos Spawns. They are also great for killing or just wounding tough things like Dragons/Big Mounts considering they only need a 5 to wound unlike most other things in the army other than a BT or HoK. I find that they can do good things for you if you take care of them. Hiding them isn't usually that hard anyway. Heck, they can even take out Warmachine crews on a good day.
Their S5 makes them good for annoying heavily armored troops.
No, I don't have any wool.
