I've made quite the 1500 pt list for some friendly play and I had one thought before I unleash the beast on my local playing board. In my army I have six flamers and this is where my question is spawned:
Should I keep them in one big unit of six or cover more of the field with two units of three?
In my army I have:
A solid block of 15 'letters with herald on jugger.
A solid, rotting block of 15 PB's with herald on palanquin.
Two units of 5 flesh hounds to unleash some bloody goodness.
And 2 units of 10 furies to cause trouble and bait my opponent.
How would you use the flamers? One big group or split up the firepower to be able to shoot at more than one thing per turn? I've heard this argument go both ways.
You can only have 1 rare unit in 1500 pts. anyway so you would have to use them in a group of 6. If you move up to 2000 pts. then you get two rare slots. If you are only using the flamers as rares then I would definitely split them into two groups. You can still deploy them next to each other and get all the benefits of the large group with some versatility of the smaller groups. The main reason people run larger groups is to avoid panic checks vs. missle fire/magic. We don't have to worry about that. If you run the two groups next to each other they can concentrate fire one one unit or hit two different units.
So basically it comes down to using up your rare slots. If Flamers are your only rare then split them up, if you want to use Bloodcrushers, Beasts, or Fiends then put them all in one group.
Haha, thanks Necro for the reminder. I had been at dinner last night and I suddenly realized I was making a 1500 pt list, not a 2k list. Ah well, I'll blame it on the term papers I've been doing lately.
But going off your advice for the 2k list, that's what I was thinking about doing: just run them side by side. This idea came to me since a lot of people I play with are DE players and like to try to flank me with the pesky dark riders. I usually just blast them with my flamers, but it's a little hard to do if there are multiple groups and if they're flanking me. So in that retrospect, just create two units of blazing goodness.
As for bloodcrushers, I've never really been able to use them effectively as people see them just as targets. I've never used fiends before and I think that the beasts of nurgle, while a cool idea, are a bit much for points considering their damage output.
I don't have experience with Crushers, just got my third one primed so I haven't used them yet. Fiends play a very similar role as Flesh Hounds with slightly more movement in exchange for slightly less killy power. Beasts I don't really care for either. Maybe if I was running mono-Nurgle with Epi I would consider them but otherwise, nah.As for bloodcrushers, I've never really been able to use them effectively as people see them just as targets.
