If they're chipping, they you probably didn't wash the pewter well enough (or at all, and if you wash them then take a while to prime them then they got dusty and would need another wash before priming) or are using a bad primer or they were poorly primered

as for plastic conversions, Ghouls are a good one

I second the ghouls part. I'm using those and some converted empire men to look like they were human at one time and then were given Nurgle's gift. It'll add a bit more character to them army if done right!

I've started making one from the plastic bloodletters.
They can be used but it takes some work.
I'll try to get a pic up sometime once it's alittle more finished.

You can't really avoid chipping on metal models unles the models are well washed, primed properly, and sealed with varnish once painted, and then handled with a lot more care. This is because plastic models have a little more give and spraypaint primer tends to bond chemically with the surface layer of plastic but the metal models are reliant on very weak inter-molecular forces instead rather than a true chemical bond. I really recommend getting a micrfibre cloth and using this to cover your figure case in sections where metal models will reside...

Yes, they are tournament legal as you will be using models made by the Games Workshop. Only thing I would we worried is where I get the 25x25mm base which is the standard daemon one.

I finished my conversions a little while back and finally got a hold of a digital camera. These are pictures of my conversions. My unit ended up being the plaugebearer command box, 10 ghouls converted to plaugebearers and a slaan converted to a herald.
Hope this helps, sorry im a terrible photographer
