So anyway, are Greater Daemons in 2k necessary if you're not in a tournament or looking to smash someone who you don't like? Greater Daemons usually add up to more than 500 points and that's not including the other Heroes.
Definatly not, I wouldnt consider them necessary until at the very least 2500, though more likely 3000.
4 Heralds still add ALOT to a daemon army.
That was what I was thinking. They are all insanely powerful, but Heralds are probably better for the general army. The whole Locus thing is awesome. Bloodletters and Daemonettes become ultra-killy, Plaguebearers are ridiculous, and Horrors are annoying.
A GD is far from necessary, 4 Heralds work just fine. I'd only field a GD if I wanted a BT (flying killing machine) or powerful magic. Heralds are cheaper, plenty killy on their own, and support your other units well.
What about if you're going in a Tournament and you want to take a cheesy list, and fielding Daemons isn't enough for you?
Heralds still work. A GD is cannon bait and far from necessary.
Pretty much what the others have said. I really only use a GD in my themed lists(Kairos in the magic list and a BT in the Khorne list). In my all-around list I just use Heralds. A Herald of Khorne on Jug. is not quite the killing machine as a BT but you can get 3 for the price of 1. 2 Heralds of Tzeentch w/ Master of Sorcery have (I think) a better magic phase than a LoC. Herald of Nurgle in a block of PB form the same tar pit as a GUO but with the added bonus of more attacks and a rank bonus. I don't have experience w/ the KoS and Daemonettes but I think you can see where I am going with this. Generally, I think that a GD is roughly the same as a Herald in a block of troops in terms of what they can do. The things you lose when you don't take the GD are: 1) GD generally has a better movement(rate and/or mode) than the block, 2) GD has Terror, and 3) people will focus much more attention on a GD than a block w/ Herald(this can be either good or bad).
In terms of tourneys, if you want to hit your opponent with the "Oh crap" factor, then take a BT. Actually taking another GD doesn't have quite the same effect. You can sometimes catch your opponent by surprise with a KoS, as they will occasionally let their guard down when they don't see the big red flying beast on the field.
Thanks. So you're saying that a Greater Daemon is effectively the same as a Herald joining a unit of the same type and is also cheaper. Sweet!
Admitedly 4 heralds is a lot better than a Greater daemon, they do more for your units especially at tournament level, however I still think a greater daemon is still fun to play with. I usually go for a Lord of Change with Power Vortex but I do sometimes take a Bloodthirster with Dark Insanity.
When I go the non GD route I will take a Herald of Nurgle with Noxious Vapours and Slime trail on a Palanquin as my general, a Herald of Khorne battle standard bearer with the Armour of Khorne and Banner of Unholy Victory on a Juggernaut and two heralds of Tzeench one with Power Vortex and the other with Spell Breaker.
Basically life sucks, there is only war and you're probably gonna get eaten by Tyranids, have fun.
I was going to have 1 Herald for each Chaos God. My general is a Herald of Nurgle, he's supported by a Herald of Khorne and his unit of Bloodletters. I have the Blue Scribes for some magical fun and the Masque.
