They still have T4. Also, a 4+ save is better than a 5+.
So I reckon they're still a Daemon General's best tarpit. As a bonus, this tarpit can kill stuff.
Whether or not they're useless though depends on you're list and tactics. If PBs were you're Anvil, and 15 Bloodletters or 10-15 Flesh Hounds were the rank breaking hammer, i don't see a problem.
they are stil the best anvil yea that is true, its not like we got more choices, i just feel they are kinda Pricey, i personally play a Pure nurgle Army, they were my anvil and my fighting power, but with the loss of the double save i'm losing on my Anvil but really gaining no more advantage on my Hammer. i mean yea i get my 2-3 ranks(i got one unit Hording) but its nothing my enemy hasn't gained either.
Idk i guess I'm just annoyed, i went for a Mild Magic Attrition list which doesn't seem too work as well as it did. Alas i ramble now and its nothing other armies aren't suffering as well i suppose(poor brets)
P.S. damn you GW for not making PBs plastic
Umm... Not enough Killing Power? Epidemius + Banner of Endless Virulence = Win. Throw in a BSB with an Icon of Great Despair, and it's just a mess. Last game I had a unit of 30 PBs with Tallyman and a HoN that caused a -20 break test. S4 attacks that poison on a 4+ and cause double towards CR is hardly useless. Throw in a few BoN, a GUO with infestation surrounded by nurglings and you've got yourself something scary.
I'm running Tzeentch and Nurgle, and I find they are still fantastic anvils, especially with a HoT with Lore of Life healing them up, and either Kairos or a LoC with Light making the PBs WS and I 10!
40k: Silver Angels of Our Martyred Lady 7/2/3 - Daemons of the Great Squiggle! 3/1/0
Fantasy: Windhost of Athel'Loren 2/0/0 - Daemons of Another Great Squiggle! 0/0/0
Warmahordes: Legion of Everblight (Absylonia)
I see what you're saying and pure Nurgle did get a bit of raw deal. But keep in mind, the Daemon army was over powered in 7th, so this was needed.
They aren't that pricey for what they do, really. You get special break tests, fear, poison attacks, high toughness and strength, ITP and the potential for regen. It aint bad for their base price.
There's other positives too, like the fact they don't need a Herald to be effective anymore. Putting them in horde formation, as you mentioned, makes them effective with poison. Then give them any of the cheap banners they have available to them and it's a pretty nasty unit that's not easy to shift.
Back this unit up with Beasts to add to kills, then smaller units of PBs to try and break ranks and it aint all bad. The GUO could get some cool spells off now too.
Anyway, as with any new edition of anything, try not to look at what's been lost, but rather what you need to change to stay effective. Nice big units of 30 are a start
And don't forget that if you have a HoT with Lore of Life (or is it Beasts, I forget) you can give them a scaly skin save on top of their regen or Ward save. Buff them up a bit and they are unstoppable.
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross the road without anyone questioning its intentions.
