I recently played in a tournament and used a small unit of screamers to do some flyovers and generally be a pain. They did surprisingly well and even though I only used 3 they definitely made their points back and survived every battle. I have noticed that no one uses them and wanted to post a breakdown of my thoughts and see what everyone else thought.
Expensive; probably the most obvious reason not to use them is because they cost so many points, you can almost get a flamer for the cost of one screamer.
Fragile; with the statline of a horror one unit of archers can completely dominate any unit of screamers potentially sending your expensive unit straight back to the realm of chaos.
Huge models; this wouldn't seem to be a problem to start with but the models size makes it difficult to use them in the way they are meant to be used, flying over multiple units and slashing them. Because they are so big they often end up within an inch of a unit at the end of their move and you can forget about multiple units.
Flying Unit; they can move just about anywhere on the battlefield without being opposed. This also gives them skirmish so they have some protection against shooting.
Rarely Used; general consensus (st least where I play) is that screamers are rubbish and unusable. This means that people around here aren't familiar with them and don't consider them a threat. This goes a long way to overcoming them being fragile since opponents would rather target things like flamers or greater daemons.
Slashing Attack; The only reason to use them really. This attack causes damage in the move phase and is a definite attack. It causes S5 hits and can be used multiple times in the same phase. A big unit of screamers, say 10, could see several units off the table a turn if it got lucky with causing panic.
I used three screamers in the battles and they regularly caused 3 wounds on units of models and sniped a couple of heroes. They saw small units flee the table and did a pretty good job charging war machines (though I wouldn't recommend it without at least 5). The point is that their slashing attack usually wounded every hit and my opponents were not expecting it.
I dream of a day when a chicken can cross the road without anyone questioning its intentions.
Screamers to little damage to units now and the way you have to position them is clincky because of new skermish orientation. against horde armies they are useless and to put it simply flamers are just simply better. hey were useable in 7th'ED but now they are useless because every one favours bigger units. against wood-elves they are pretty good but then again they will just get shot down because they are t3 better off taking a couple of furie units for rear charges when needed.
Screamers are terrible vs big blocks this is given, but don't underestimate them, they are AWESOME vs small mobile units, monsters, other skirmishers. They are also amazing vs scouting units, Chameleon skinks and Gutter runners come to mind when you turn around and hit them and make those units hurt. Don't forget about small hitting units like sword masters, hell even blood crushers will get dragged down. Top that with a relatively cheap deployment drop, similar to a single fiend, and the ability to be used as a charge diversion in a pinch screamers are still worthwhile in 8th ed.
You just need to be a little bit conservative with them, and they do ok. The only other issue is they usually get cut 1st from a list for pts in smaller games, cause they're primary targets generally don't get fielded either.
