If you have friends complaining about you using actual Grotesque figures to represent Grotesques just because they are on their original bases, then you need better friends.

You'd think twice if someone was using the old Ghazkghull model, he - much like the old grotesque models - are literally tiny compared to everything else. Using the old (well, technically current but lets not go down that road) grotesque models as actual grotesques is pushing the spirit part of the game a bit far given the art for them in the codex has one towering over an ork nob.
To use a figure as the figure it was intended to be is not pushing the spirit of game. These people should stop being so anally retentive, it is after all just a game and the figures you are using are mere counters. Unless people are willing to pay for you to update your army, they've no right to complain about you using the legitimate figures you already own.
I think it comes down to your opponent OKing their use. Technically if the model doesn't exist then there shouldn't be a problem using the old ones but it would be nice for the person to take the time to make appropriately sized models.
