I had a look on the thread 'A quick poll on LO' and I noticed that most people are running armies with Wyches. Also, the other DE player in my area uses Wyches as well. I never used them, and now I am quite successful with them, but I wanted to know whether this is just a few people or does everyone run Wyches and I'm missing out?
Also I've never seen anyone use Haemonculi-based lists (grotesques, wracks, talos, etc.) Are they viable or am I missing out (again)?
Every Heamo-unit except the heamos themselves are very mediocre and there's other units in the codex who generally preform better.
Heamo units
Wracks are ok, but wyches and kabalites are better. They're supposed to be though but fail in being so. Liquifiers are nice though but that's about their uses.
Grots are kind of bad, ogryn syndrome! Can perhaps be used to hide an IC but other than that, pass.
Talos are generally too slow for most armies since to be competative in any sence you need to have transports and they'll just leave the talos behind. WWP aren't as good as it used to be either, sadly. They can act as an objective babysitter or a firesoaker... Who can't take that much punishment either!
If you count scourges towards heamo units they're just too expensive for what they do, sadly again cause they look awesome!
I do run them from time to time but as I stated above there's generally better options.
Kabalites
Kabalite warriors is just awesome, I like 'em in a raider with splinterracks, it's killer. Trueborn is awesome too, either with massive poision spam or blasters, even a darklance sniping squad can be nice and cheap.
Wyches
Wyches in venoms with haywire are deadly aswell. As for their elite part there's no reason to take them unless you want a really fluffy list.
Beastmasters are really nice and can deal with most things, just avoid spending points on the actual master. Lastly, reavers can be fun and used to forfill many roles, just don't get over your head with upgrades!
A mix of all is good, but if I were to go Mono I'd stick with kabalites since overwatch and "new" fleet rules kinda stuck it to us and our CC.
I have been currently running my DE as a mix of coven and Kabal. I do use the WWPs but instead of pulling assault units up field I shoot for a couple of mid field blobs of 20 warriors supported by Wych venoms, ravagers, and beasts. On occasion I will run some eldar allies but the list works well on it's own.
How do those 20 man Warrior blobs work out for you, Quixos? Do you support them with a Haemonculous? That would seem to be the most effective way to run a squad that large.
I think one of the keys to having a competitive DE list is to make sure that you have multiple Venoms. That little transport with it's 12 poisoned shots is probably the best thing in our Codex in 6th Edition.
The 20 man blob squads are working fairly well. It depends on the situation but I do usually support them with the Homns. I have taken on the tyranid sky blight formation with 7 flying MCs and they performed very well. Either killing a MC in one go or grounding it for my venoms to finish taking the rest of the wounds off. But being able to deploy them mid field on either side of the board is key. I don't think they would do as well if they had to march up on their own. Plus the homn with it's liquifier makes an opponent think twice about charging those units. I roasted and ten man gaunt squad before they made combat at all.
Are you putting anything on your Sybarites? Venom Blade or Phantasm Grenade Launcher, for instance? Either of those could make some opponents regret a reckless charge. How are you deploying? Via WWP?
I actually don't put any upgrades in the unit besides SCs. Challenges are extremely predominant in my area (as there are a lot of chaos players) so sticking a character into the units turned out to be a bad idea more often than not. Usually the homn with a liquifier was enough of a deterrent because no one wants to take d3 auto hits before being rapid fired by up to 18 warriors and 2 SCs. I do deploy with the WWPs as it is the best and safest way to get those squads to mid-field. My list is generally a turn 2 devastation, with beasts charging in and these warrior squads letting loose. Besides getting the homns into position my first turn is usually focused on popping transports for juicy targets. Hope that answers your questions Psyan.
