Hey guys here is my situation. I currently play a WE army and now after seeing a few games my fiance would like to start up an army. Her choice was DE i was wondering if you could help me get a rough idea of what to start getting her for her first 1000 pts. thanks in advance to all that help.
I would get the book first. I don't play 1000 pt armies, so for me it's sometimes hard knowing the numbers you'd want in your units etc. The battalion is probably the cheapest way to start, but not necessarily the best way to start. Most smaller point games are won by shooting usually. I'd load up on shades and get a decent core unit (spearmen or corsairs) and then some dark riders. Here's a basic list of what I would probably use.
2x 5 dark riders with repeater crossbows
1x unit of 20 spearmen with shields
1x 8 shades with great weapons
get a noble with repeater crossbow, magic armor or weapon and seadragon cloak and you're nearly there. You've got about 100pts to spare (maybe enough for an assassin)
While I think the Dark Rider models are allright, many don't like them for their old horse models and price. A quick conversion would make cheaper and more updated models. Most use wood elf glade riders for that. You could do the same for the shades.

thanks for the advice .... well we currently have the book and after some skimming throgh it she is dead set and in love with harpies as well she would like a sorceress to lead her army. any ideas how to fit those 2 into a descent list ? she is not terribly concerned how she has to play a list as long as it has those 2 units in the list.
substitute the sorceress for the master and swap one unit of dark riders for harpies
ok so were going with the above list and swapped out the hero with the sorceress and a unit of dark riders for a unit of harpies. next question are corsairs better in close combat or as shooters with this list ? we currently have the models ready to be assembled but are not sure how to equip them.
in my current list i'm running two blocks of 18 corairs with extra hand weapon (6x3) and one unit of 14 as bowmen, two ranks of 7
the problem with handbows is that they are str3 and have limited range. At best, you'll get to shoot twice before getting into combat. And there's a good chance that you may not hit/hurt anything while doing so. I'd take extra weapons. When you get to larger point games, then it might be worth it taking a small unit with handbows. (but I doubt it, you've got better things to buy with the points)
