Alrighty. I've never tried an army like this before - with the Cauldron - but it looks like a pretty nice upgrade device so I thought I might try building a list around it.

Overall, i'm pretty happy with the coherency of the army. Dreadlord goes with the BG, Assassin with the Execs. I'd try to keep the Execs and BG together within 12" of the Cauldron so they both have Stubborn, Coks on one flank, DRs on the other, warriors sort of held back to keep the Dagger sorceress company. The crossbows are sort of an outlier - I needed the core slot and they were cheap. The same cannot be said for the rest of the army - I don't want to think about how much all those metal models will cost. Dear lord I'm going to be broke in a big way...

I wish I could cram in some more magic defence, but I had to "trim the fat" off of almost every unit to squeeze the Coks in so there isn't much room for tweaking unless I drop the Knights or a hydra.

Comments? Ideas? Before I got out and spend another $250+, I'd like an idea of how effective this list could / will be. Thanks.

Hmm, I like this list...but the only hangup i see are the xbows (for me personally)

Never found only just 1 unit to be extremely effective. I would probably drop them for another unit of darkriders

but overall I like the fear this list could install..kudos to you

    Thanks much

I agree with the DR / XB observation. I've never had success with RXB troops. On the other hand, my success with DRs has been limited and - what's more - I can't find the 12 pts I need to upgrade the unit!! The points really are stretched thin - dropped the shields on the warriors, the musician on the BG, Dark Venom on the assassin... not sure what's left to trim.

Plus, $50 a unit is really heavy for DRs and this army won't be cheap to begin with... Ugh I told myself I wouldn't think about it!!! Gah!!! Maybe ebay will be my salvation..?

Do you think swapping the DRs for another unit of XBs would improve things or be another step backwards? I suppose, if nothing else, the Xbs can be flank guards for the Cauldron and stuff...

btw, can the cauldron move? If so, how far? Normal movement of the crew? Half?

    Thanks again.

first off, i dont like the dreadlord. your better off replacing him with a sorceress.
second, your sorceress is illegal, you cant have a tome of furion(arcane) and a sacrifical dagger(arcane). ^.^

AHH! You're right! I'd better fix that before anyone sees....

Why don't you like the Dreadlord? He's Ld10 and no half bad in combat. I think I will replace the whip with Soulrender, however, since he'll have ASF.

Another take on the same thing

I did some more fiddling with the list. I have the great misfortune of facing a lot of power gaming magicy armies so I've switched the role of my magic units back to the defensive. To add another variable and take advantage of two Stubborn units, I added a BSB to go with the BG and then mounted my general to add some punch to the CoKs. Bad news is the small improvements added up and I had to drop the RXBs on the Dark Riders. It's not a major loss, but one I'll definitely miss when facing Skaven and their pesky weapon teams. Overall, I think the list has improved melee power, but lost a lot in the magic and shooting departments. Ideas? Thanks.

That's certainly the trick. Skaven magic is brutal. Fortunately, my local Skaven player is making a switch to chaos - still some good magic, but fewer spells.

Ok the second list is very good!
I dont like the assassin though , he has good equipment , but he dies very quickly why dont you drop him for more BG or EX?
Only a thought, I play against skaven a lot 2, I hate the warpcannon and ratling guns , but I won some times , by just outmanoevring him with dark knights and cold one knights , putting the big Hydras to teh front and hail the lill basterds down with RXB & RBT fire.
    thats my experience with skaven
    even though i was lucky!

YET ANOTHER Take on the Same Idea.

I figure I'll keep using this thread to avoid cluttering the forum with all my armies

A few games later, I'm really enjoying the flexibility of the Cauldron of Blood so I'm continuing my plans for a future 2250 pt list. The more I think about it, the Assassin just doesn't jive with me due to his distinct lack of save and T3. Can you say "free VPs?"

So, I dropped 'im and played with the points some.

I exchanged a sorceress for a Master BSB. He fulfils more-or-less the same role as the Assassin, but is much more survivable and gets +1 CR in there as well. He will go with the Executioners (makes them ITP too).

With about a hundred points left, I thought about giving the warriors a magic banner (War Banner probably) and/or the Executioners a banner. Instead, I added a second big block of warriors. The thinking behind this is mostly "hey, it's another big unit." I've also considered deploying them in a single rank in front of the army as - quite literally - a meat shield against shooting (the bane of my CC armies). They will certainly get torn to shreds, but perhaps enough will flee to safety for half points.

    What do you think?
Should I focus on beefing up the unit I've already got (more Cold Ones, magic banners all around) or keep that second block of warriors instead?

    Thanks in advance.
