I put together an army, but I would also like to hear others strategies for beating Skaven--do I have the right idea?
Tonight I had my first experience in a long time playing against Skaven. I did not know that I was going to be going up against them, and did not prepare adequately! Basically, his magic and range destroyed me. His strategy is probably the simple Skaven strategy to mass a variety of units (and he included Plague Monks who are toughness 4 and have Frenzy for three attacks on the charge). However, he barely spent any points on his rattling gun, warpfire thrower and caster who had warp lightning and a bound warp lightning spell. Basically, warp lightning obliterated two units and the warpfire cannon took out another unit that overcharged. His 'auxiliary' units destroyed me.
My goal is not to come back and win, but just put up a good fight. I'm scared because he seems to run a lot of efficient units--I had whole unites just wiped out which were mostly play mistakes.
Here is my list that I came up with to fight back:
1 X Sorceress, lvl 2, Sacrificial Dagger, Dispel Scroll - 185
2 x 5 Dark Riders with rxb and musician - 117 each
2 x 5 Harpies - 55 each
1 X 12 Black Guard FC, RoH, Banner of HG, (Commander Inside) 251
1 X 20 Warriors (no shields) 120 pts
1 X Cold one Chariot - 100pts
Here are my questions --
1) What (and would) you take out to add witch elves -- they seem good against low toughness troops and he has little range.
2) What (and would) you take out to add a hydra which I think could be devastating?
3) Any general likes or dislikes about the army? My strategy would be to take out his auxiliary units. and then use the black guard as an anvil to finish anything else off. Thanks in advance!
probably take out some BG. they will die to his shooting. the hydra will rape him in 1000pts. the harpies will serve you well. send them straight after the Warplightening cannon as it has to flee from a charge. once thats gone send them and the ark riders hunting jezzails if he has any. and let the hydra breathe on stuff until you can get a flank charge
Edit: woah hold on....your putting the Sac dagger in a unit of blackguard? ARE YOU MAD? lol they are wayyyyy too expensive to be sacrificed for power dice. thats wht 6/7 point spearmen are for

defenitly take the hydra, the terror and the flame attack is devestating to skaven.
Beside that, I would rather take 2 scrolls on you sorceress, since his magic kicked ur *ss.
Take some Black Guards (screen them well)
1 unit of harpies will do, just go after his cannon
2 units of 5 clean dark riders are cheap and effective, charge in flank of a unit skaven. If 3 dark riders survive the attacks they receive back after their wounds then they have no ranks and run for sure!
A Chariot I do like, charge in along with warriors. The SCR from warriors negates their SCR and the chariot and warrior attacks send them running home for sure!
Corsairs can do a fine job to, take 12 deploy wide, frenzy banner.
Witch Elves also killer.
Thanks. The game will be taking place soon! I'll let you know how it goes!
What about this list!
Lokhir fellhear @ 250
20 Warriors @ 155
Full command, Shields
16 Corsairs @ 210
Full Command, Banner of murder
5 Harpies @ 55
5 Harpies @ 55
1 Cold One Chariot @ 100
1 War Hydra @ 175
OMG what about this list
2x terror and lokhir kills many skavens +1A per enemy rank (10 attacks agaisnt 30 clannies in ranks of 5)
I didn't choose the sea serpent standard because frenzy can be your end if your redirected. So I went for armour piercing. I think this will help a great deal since the most attacks will come from lokhir he's so awesome.
Plus you gain double VP with anything you overrun with him
- warriors + chariot team up
- hydra to take the flanks (stay away from his cannon)
- corsairs + lokhir take the biggest nastiest unit with heroes head on. If he challanges accept with your champion. Make sure you mow down most of his normal models.
- harpies 1 on each side or near their targets, possible 1 unit in front of your corsairs.
Since you're combat and have no anti magic you need to get in combat as soon as possible. March ahead and stomp on those puny rats!Harpies
Harpies are a must for this. You can in turn 2/3 take out his cannon. When you charge he MUST flee. And thus the next turn can't shoot. When u catch him hes dead.
Also when there is a wizzard inside a unit (hopefully not on the corner of a unit) charge in with your harpies. Direct all possible attacks on his wizzard, hopefully killing it. Suicide charge to get a wizzard out is a good win.
This one Is a great distraction and will get some attention, It would be nice if some magic went his way. With his high T and regeneration and 5W. But not too much because he can only take that much S5 magic.
Against plaguemonks throw in this beast. With T5, 4+Asv and regeneration you're very likely to stop their attacks. And deal back alot of wounds.
Deploy 6 wide 3 deep.
