Hi everyone, I have been playing Warhammer Fantasy for a while and have been thinking about starting Dark Elves. I have written up a 2k list and would like to know what you think. Thanks in advance.
Master, Crimson Death, Armor of Darkness, BSB
Sorceress, Level 2, Dispel Scroll, Dispel Scroll
Sorceress, Level 2, Crystal of Midnight, Null Talisman
20 Spearmen, Musician, Standard
5 Dark Riders, Reaper Bolt Throwers
5 Dark Riders, Reaper Bolt Throwers
19 Black Guard, Musician, Standard (Hag Graef)
19 Executioners, Musician, Standard
2 Reaper Bolt Throwers
Generally a 2k list will use a lord choice, either a Deadlord or Supreme Sorc are good choices, but using a ld 8 sorc as your general is not a good choice imo (BSB can't be general).
Crimson Death is good, armor of darkness is okay.
2 scrolls on a lvl 2 is odd to me, why not take say the sacraficial dagger on one sorc and stick that sorc with warriors for powerdice and use the focus familir with another sorc or tome of furion with another scroll and stick her with a unit of crossbowmen. I also do not know where you are going to put your sorceresses so they are not in harms way, they are rather expensive to be throwing away.
20 warriors muso starndard not a good core choice to me, I know some people swear by big blocks of warriors but I don't take them at all I'd rather pay for 2x10 units of crossbowmen.
May want to give the darkriders Musicans becuase they are a bait and flee unit it will help their rally.
Might want some harpies, and crossbowmen, the best core choices in the book IMO.
Executioners can't take the banner of Hag Garef, its 35pts they can only take up to 25pts, so if you want it on them (which is a good idea) you have to take a Hag BSB with it, they are khaninite so they cannot take anything but assassins and Hags.
19 blackguard or confectioner is rather excessive imo, you wont be untouched going into combat so you will never get that 4th rank for combat and your killing power does not lie in static rez, nor is the 5-5-5-5 the best way to run them some ppl prefer 7-7-7 but I think 6-6-6 is better because your not as wide but you still get more killing in.
Rare choices are straight forward.
I wish dark riders could thake RBTs, since they would be the only fast cav able to carry a war machine. All kidding aside, 5 with no options is the best way to run them, sure they bait and flee, but LD 8 is good enough for rallying a support unit that doesn't really matter.
I like that you put 2 chariots in the army, I am a big fan of how much damage they can bring. I don't think people use them enough, though I can understand why, since they can't take away ranks, are slow, and is able to be one shot killed by S7. But they do hit hard, they don't take up much frontage, and they are cheap.
The weakest aspect of your list is the executioners, 19 of them sounds dangerous, but they only get 1 attack, strike last, move on foot, and have the normal 5+ save that DE have. The fact that you took such a large unit of them, means that people are unlikely to let you use them very well, since the obvious threat is, well, obvious. If you take them a small unit with no command is best, to use a flanking unit to support a charge from a block unit. They look pretty good, but unfortunately didn't get very good rules.
I don't like the level of magic you brought, 6 power dice and a dagger is pretty good in 1500 point games, but at 2k bring 8, the magic defense at higher points is quite frustrating if you only have 6 dice.
20 warriors with FC aren't going to really do a huge amount of good, as long as you understand that, they are still good for denying areas for support units, and protecting the flanks of important units. If you do want to make them a bit more dangerous, increase them to 25, and stick a master BSB with the banner of naggarythe. If you also take the war banner, it ends up around 7 static res (may be as high as 8 IIRC) and is unbreakable.
Even though many other people support the use of crossbow warriors, I don't. They don't really hit that often most rounds of shooting, they don't offer any special tactics like shades and dark riders do, and they limit the available tactics due to how many fire lanes you have to keep clear. They are effective at what they do though, if you consider them to just be cheap core fillers that might actually get their points back. That being said I still use them, they work really well with the cauldron list I use. (my chaos warrior opponent is now scared to death of killing blow crossbow warriors charging his knight's flank)
Thank you very much for the advice. I had not thought about a sorceress with a sacrificial dagger in a unit of crossbowmen. Also, I will take the advice about putting the banner of nararythe on a bsb and sticking him in a unit.
Excellent point about the executioners. What would you recommend I replace them with?
