Alright all...Im a new DE player and Im about to purchase my first 1000 pts(about) and I wanted to make sure I was going into the right direction. Im trying to make a friendly/competative army list..aiming more so to the competative side but not soo hard that my other friends starting in WF don't quit...anyway so here is what I think is the best stuff to by for 1000pts...i haven't made a list yet soo if you all could just tell me if im missing something vital in a 1000pt game or If i have two much of something..thanks here it is
1 unit of (16) Warrior spearmen
1 unit of (16) Repeater crossbowmen
1 unit of (5) Cold One Knights
1 Repeater Bolt Thrower
1 unit of (2) Harpies
1 Dark elf sorceress on foot and 1 sorceress mounted on a dark peg.
Buy the battalion box. You get 12 spear warriors, 16 RxBs, 5 CoKs, and 20 corsairs. All for 90 USD. So you end up paying about normal for the warriors and CoKs, but get 20 corsairs (about a 40 dollar value) additional. After that I bought 2 boxes of warriors, which gives you enough models to run 2 units of 20 warriors, 2 units of 10 RxBs. Sure its hard to actually find a use for the corsairs, but they look good, and can be used in smaller games quite well. They can also be converted into shades.
So if you just buy what I just said, you can make 800-900 points worth of stuff without even a character.
After that your first purchase should be some additional heavy hitters. A unit of black guard 10-15 strong with command (in the typical crimson death ASF configuration) is a good option, or you could go for the hydra. At 1000 points he is very tough to bring down.
Dark riders are rather expensive to purchase, but I never leave home without a unit or two with RxBs now. 5 per unit with no command is how I personally run them.
harpies are better in higher point games where you can afford throw away units.
The bolt thrower should be purchased in pairs if you are going to run them.
so if I bought what you said in the first paragraph and then added one sorcoress on foot and one mounted would that be a competative 1000pt choice?
It would be a solid army, though the sorceress on cold one isn't really any good. LD 8 stupid casters is a bit of a bad thing. I personally would put her on a elven steed, I think you can get some from bitz orders. A dark rider mounted sorceress is nearly as mobile as a peg sorceress.
As for the competitiveness of the force I recommended, it isn't terrible, nut it is a bit lacking in heavy hitting units. Its a bit core heavy, so that is to be expected. Since the units don't very hard, and this is a low points game, I suggest running combat heroes instead. Magic at low levels is effectively random shooting, and you don't really need magic defense either. So combat heroes are the cheaper and probably better choice. I would start with an on foot guy for you general, and maybe a BSB master too (foot or mounted, I use my corsairs banner guy as my BS.
TBH, if you get what I stated, that is all the foot core you need for any points level. So it is more of a solid start to a larger force so you don't have to waste money and end up with wasted models.
