I am new to Dark Elves. My son plays Wood Elves. He has alot of archers, one noble a unit of fast calvary (glade riders I think) and quite a few Dryads.
I was wondering if you all could offer some suggestions for my army. I was thinking of a unit of 5 or 6 Cold One Knights. a unit of 6 Dark Riders. 2 Units of Warriors one with spears the others with repeater crossbows a elf noble (not sure if I should mount him and also what equip should I give him) and also take 1 or 2 bolt throwers.
My question is do you think this would do ok against his army and also he tends to run his glade riders down a flank (watched him do this three times in a row against another opponent) and his Dryads he keeps just in the woods so he can get a charge off and no one can really hit them.
What units would do best against the dryads. Should I hang everything back and let him come to me as his archers can only shoot 30 and my bolt throwers can shoot 48?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated and this is my first Warhammer Fantasy as we normally played 40K.
If he's got alot of archers, I would take Corsair instead of warriors. 4+ armor vs shooting comes in handy vs WE.
Rork edit: Woah! Check your spelling - you only give "special chocies" to your girlfriend.
I've always favoured spearmen over corsairs. they can do anythign a corsair cando and they are much cheaper (points and money). From what I hear and have played against, Wood Elves don't have great armour or armour saves, sio take lots of warriors with repeater crossbows.
Take at least two Reaper Bolt Throwers. They are really effective. If he has cavalry, combat them with Cold One Knights. Dark Riders aren't really worth it as they are basically warroirs on horseback and just aren't worth the points/money.
Chariots are cheap (points-wise) and are very good. All elf toughness is really low, so wherever you can, use shields or armour.
for special units, Witch elves are good at attacking and are Frenzied, but fall like flies if they are attacked (no armour, etc). Against Wood Elves they should be really good. harpies can fly and are good against artilery crew but aren't good against anything else. Shades are durable and carry repeater crossbows, you can use them against almost any army.
Hope this helps
Thank you for the replies. But what about the Dyrads. Anyway to neutralize them while still in the woods? Mabye a sorceress with a chill wind? Being that it's a magic missile would it be able to go through the woods? Also mount the noble or let him walk?
magic and shooting would be the best tactic to do. use all your magic on the drayads, and the drop like flies cause they dont get theyre ward save, and seeing as his archers and glade riders have practically no save, repeater crossbows or bolt throwers will do the trick.
i dont think id take chariots or witch elves. If your kid is smart he'll take his units of skimershers and bait your frenzied witches into the trees where they well spend the next 2-3 turns trying to get out of them. Same with the chariots only this time youll spend the game chasing him around the trees.
sorry for the double post. delete at will
And yes, chariots and witch elves would be the WORST unit choices possible. One has no save at all, and the other cant even enter woods without a good chance of being destroyed.
I think enough has been said. Magic for the dryads, shooting for everything else. Bolt throwers will play a big part here.
If you were feeling really creative, a war hydra would do the trick, too. Tough, heaps of wounds, and should make short work of most of the woodelf units, sice they have ltiile to no combat res.
your noble should look like this:Also mount the noble or let him walk?
sea dragon cloak
and maybe seal of grond if your not taking a sorcerer and how many points are you playing im guessing 1k?
I agree that a hydra would be a god idea, ecspecially since that the dryads? or treemen or whatever are flammable.
That's my opinion. If yours is different, fine. I'm just offering differnet ideas.
