hi all, i am back from a break from fantasy (about 2 years) got the new rules. A consept leapt into my mind, what about an all cav dark elves army.
So a highborn on a dragon, a sorceress or two on steeds. Some dark riders and Cold one Knights and perhaps a chariot or two.
Being that I have no experience with dark elves how would a list like this work, would it work?
Any advise would be greatly apreciated, on a side note i was thiking about a witch elf cheavy list too, as i like the mini's.
I suspect it would look great but perform badly.
The highborn on dragon is a big points sink, but the character is pretty weak and you can't give him much in the way of a ward save (5+ at best, IIRC). A couple of bolt throwers and you're toast ...
Your magic will be relativelty weak too (2 level 2s at best - the dragon counts as a hero, I believe, limiting the number of sorceresses you can have), and you won't have any missile support (apart from a few rxbs on the dark riders).
You'll be relying on mobility rather than Combat res to win combats, but your heavy cavalry
and chariots are both subject to stupidity, so you may get caught in "compromising positions".
So the list would be something like:
Highborn on Dragon
2 * level 2 on horses
3 * 5 dark riders (+ rxb)
3 * 5 cold one knights
Very small, half of it is subject to stupidity and there's not much in the way of magic or missiles ... ow!
But it would look fantastic! It would be fun to play with (and against, I suspect!) but it would be very difficult to win with ... Remember, all you'll have is 33 T3 elves, 2 chariots and a dragon! Anything with any reasonable amount of missiles will probably wipe you out!
The witch elf themed army might be a better bet - although witch elves are horrendously vulnerable to missile fire (T3 no save). The trick is to present the enemy with better targets while the witch elves close to combat ... OR ... let the rest of your army do the winning while the witch elves act as (expensive) pin-cushions.
I'd try a few games (using proxy figures, or borrowing a friend's army) as dark elves are notoriously tricky to learn.
Hope this is helpful,
I rely more upon infantry, and really only use cavalry to spearhead charges. The infantry missile fire and magic provides adequate back-up, and the front units are usually damaged/destroyed before my cavalry is gone, so my infantry whittles the army down with missile fire, and the melee cuts up the survivors.
I dislike dragons, and anything noticeably good/different/big, because they take up too much points and attract fire. They usually go down without making up for a third of their points.

I have run all Cav lists and it is tricky, every unit must do its job or your in ALOT of trouble and stupidity is a big hindrance but if your prepared to try it by all means go ahead it is VERY fun!!
But an unforgiving army becomes even more unforgiving so you may lose a decent amount at first while getting the hang of it but if you manage it then it is VERY fun...
And for the record i used full cav no chariots no dragon and only used highborn and nobles all combat... and not much can withstand a flank and a rear charge of dark riders and a 8 strong squad of cold ones with a highborn in them
Have fun and i wish you many souls to sacrifice!
You can give him regeneration, which I believe works like a 4+ ward in the new rules.Originally Posted by Spon
