Has anyone given thought to running a Supreme Sorceress on a Black Dragon? If so, what kit were you thinking of running with them?
Haven't thought about it, and I'm not sure why you would do it, but if you do, you have to have the pendant of khaelith (reverse ward to keep her alive) and the focus familiar, so you can still cast magic while in combat.
There would actually not really be a need for the Focus Familiar. In general, The only restrictions on casting while in close combat are based on Line of Sight. Being as she would be on a Dragon and he is considered Large, she would have line of sight over te top of standard troops for casting out of close combat. Still have the problem of arc of sight that the Familiar could help with.
The general idea would be to fly around keeping within 6" of the targets to inflict Terror checks and hit with that nasty breath weapon the Black Dragon has. Honestly, I was thinking that the 4+ WS with the wound reflection would be a good part to her kit, though expensive, and still leaves her vulnerable to big shooting.
I'm still not sure if I think it's a "good" idea, but I think it might catch some people off guard seeing that during placement. Kind of a WTF moment.
if you're in combat (which is where dragons should be) and you don't have a spell that states it may be cast into close combat, then you can't cast anything. The Dark Lore has a couple of CC spells and other spells that don't matter either way (power of the darkness) but if you have 2 magic missiles, then half your magic phase is shut down just by you being on a dragon and in combat. The way the familiar was worded, seemed to allow you to get out of combat (out of body) and still cast magic missiles and the other restricted types of spells that you normally wouldn't be able to cast. Unless I read it wrong. Either way, having a big time spell caster on a fighty beast is a bad idea in my book. It sets up too many contradictory positions and costs too many points (even with cheaper troops, it's difficult to fit all the units you want in a list)
Exactly. You still have standard targeting restrictions for the magic missle (line of sight, not in CC, range) but you are not prevented from casting it while in close combat. Normally you wouldn't cast it purely because your line of sight is restricted to just the unit you are in combat with, and they are not a valid target, being that they are already in combat.
So as long as you can gear your Sorceress to withstand some combat damage, then you can still use the Dragon, it's breath weapon, and it's terror, and also take on some units in CC as long as your LoS isn't going to be compromised.
page 107 and 110 of the Rulebook (BFSP) clearly state that you can't cast spells at a unit in combat unless stated in the spell's rules as an exception and no magic missiles can be cast into or while in combat period, just like you can't shoot while in combat. A character on a dragon should be fighting, otherwise their wasting their super tough dragon's potential. A level 4 wizard should be casting spells, otherwise you're wasting the points invested in magic capability. While the new dark lore has a balance of both damage spells and unit altering spells, I still think the best choice is to keep your sorceress where she can cast to the best of her ability and your dragon in combat where it kills stuff and doesn't get shot at.
There's no doubt that word of pain is designed to help us in combat, but a level 4 is only going to know 4 spells (5 including power of darkness) so there is a chance that she will know all the LOS spells and one more, making her near useless in combat. Which against undead or something, will mean that we just wasted lotsa points for magic . That's all I'm trying to say. I'm sure the modelling possibilities are limitless and cool.
Good catch on the Magic Missle ruling Buckero0. I apparently glossed over that section. In general I totally agree with the seperation of the Caster and the Dragons roles. I just found it curious that the option was there.
Also, pardon my ignorance, what is BFSP?
