I'm thinking of running 2 units of 5 Dark Riders as mobile x-bows troops and flanker attackers. Nothing wrong with that, I know. But I'm also thinking of sticking a lvl 2 sorceress on dark steed in each unit, protecting them and making them mobile. The wizards can leave the units when they go into combat, they'll always have a unit screening them when faced with enemies on their own. Is this a terrible idea for reasons soon being made clear to me?

Doesn't sound to bad, the mobility really helps the Sorc a lot. The only thing that would concern ==Me== is the relative frailty of Dark Riders. One good magic missile will send them running and leave your Sorceress either dead or fleeing. Also, you probably won't want to be hitting combat, so that presents a problem to our really good war machine hunters.
How are you thinking of equipping them? I can see the Null Talisman and maybe even the Lifetaker working their way into the list to protect and complement the Riders.

Does having a sorceress join the unit negate their fast cav rules? I'm sorry if I'm being stupid but I was thinking about doing just this today!
I don't really like the idea because of 2 things.
1 fast cav doesn't offer that much protection (5+save and mobility is all)
2 I use my fast cav to bait enemy units or negate rank bonuses on the flank/rear, march block. 2 of those uses are not a good place to have a magic user. You intentionally flee, leaving your magic defense poor for a turn and there's always the chance that you may not rally. Combat is combat, mages don't belong. Having the mobility is great, but losing my fast cav unit to babysit a mage is not a great idea in my opinion.
