I was just wondering if the unit character upgrades such as Tullaris for the Executioners and Kouran for the Black Guard were worth taking, and if so what kind of situation, (i.e. game size or good unit combinations)?
I’m thinking about a unit of Executioners with Tullaris and a Hag BSB for my Khaine themed army, but is it too many eggs in the one basket point-wise, and should I maybe look at two units of Executioners and have him in one and her in the other or just drop the idea of him all together?
Any opinions on the matter are welcome.
I haven't run Tullaris yet, though I would guess that the main point of him would be based on challenges issued by him, since that is where he would really net you some gains.
I have run Kouron in a unit of Black Guard in a 200 point match, mainly because I wanted to use my Black Guard as an Anvil unit and follow up with my CoK as the hammer. Kouron making them Unbreakable should have helped in that respect, but I got nailed by terrible rolls and ended up breaking out of the combat and having my battle line completely shattered by a Brettonian charge. Not Kouron's best showing I'm sure, and I wouldn't expect that to happen that often.
Between the two, I see Kouran as a much more viable option to use over Tullarius, for these reasons. Looking at their base stat lines, they arent going to have enough attacks to make up their point cost. To me the main advantagess they give are from what they give to their units. A fear causing executioner unit is not alot to brag about, but an unbreakable unit of 20 black guard, possible with the standard of hag graef in it?? That unit would be a tough cookie to break in CC.
Never seen the point in special characters myself, its hardly like they add any character to your army if every one else is using them.
The characters are ok at the higher point games and fun to run. But at lower point games and even at the higher one you can give the champion 25 points of magic items. Like in the black gaurd the champ has 3 attacks. Give him the item that gives him st6 or if the unit has always strike first banner give him the great weapon with armour piercing.
A small unit of Executioners fielded like this can be very effective if it gets the initial charge.
Although I think the Black Guard are the better Special Choice I would argue they need the Special Character less. If your Black Guard are in a combat where being unbreakable matters then you are doing something wrong (and it's not like killing Kouran is overly hard).
I'm still new to fantasy but Kouran I think is quite cool as it means the Black Guard will never fail you until they die, but they are already stubborn so it really depends if you think its worth the points to make them unbreakable. I personally prefer the Banner of Hag Graef instead of Kouran, keeping the overall unit more affordable.
I can't say much about the executioner guy though, havn't given him much thought as of yet.
The risk with Kouran (and admittedly with Tullarius as well) is that they are not hard to kill, it does not mean "the Black Guard will never fail you until they die" it means they will not fail you till Kouran dies.
Black Guard with the Banner of Hag Graef don't need any further buffs, and the cost of Kouran could be put to more use in other places.
