I've been playing Warhammer Fantasy for about a year now. My current army is about 2500 points of Wood Elves, and I've been looking into starting a second army. Initially I thought about going for Chaos, Vampire Counts, or another army with a different playstyle from Elves, but damn, those new DE models just look so damn good. While still elves, and still fragile, the playstyle seems different enough to seduce me. Being a WE player, I've missed Bolt Throwers, and solid offensive magic, which the DEs seem to offer in spades.
I take it battalion boxes are hard to come by, so I'm looking for advice from the pros on a solid 1000 point list to start with that'll ideally include units that would make sense in any list, be it 1k points, 2k, or higher. As in, I'd like to build a core that I could realistically expand around.
In lieu of a battalion box, any thoughts?
Sorcereress, some corsairs and some spearmen. DE are just too good at magic to not take a sorceress.
So I take it the spearman block is to take the brunt of the attack, while the corsairs flank? What about other units, like scouts, crossbowmen? CoKs? I'm trying to picture a core, well-rounded, all purpose, if basic, 1000 pt list.
the battalion is an very good start. And since you like magic and big flying spears then go for it. A quick example of an 1000 list would be something like this:
Sorceress: lvl2 + sacrificial dagger (in spear unit)
Sorceress: lvl2 + focus familiar (in corsair unit, last rank)
24 Warriors with spear and shields + standard (5x5 formation)
12 Crossbow warriors + shields (6x2 formation)
11 Corsairs + full command (6x2 formation)
5 Cold one knights
for this list you will have to buy the battalion + warrior box + 2 sorceresses + 1 bolt thrower
To be honest with you all dark elf core choices are very good and you can build an army from any core choice you pick. For special choices the most common ones are cold one knights and black guard. Rare it's usually 50/50 between hydra and bolt throwers, you can't go wrong with either one.
Question about those corsairs - would you give them an extra hand weapon, or a repeater x-bow? I'm leaning more toward the hand weapon, but I'm curious what you have to say.
Extra hand weapon every time. Im honestly not quite sure what GW had in mind when they decided to allow the corsairs to take the handbows. Im not even really sure what purpose the unit would serve. At an 8" firing range, this is within charge range of all enemies except dwarves, and you would only get one salvo off. With the same amount of xbormen for the same cost, you could technically get 3 or 4x the amount of shots off. I would always go with the additional hand weapon.
Alright, next question -- do you tend to use a scroll caddy at all, and if so, how many scrolls? I'm very unfamiliar with how DE magic works currently.
I do, but I may as well tell you how I play sorceresses instead of trying to explain it. If I run any type of magic heavy army, Ill use a lvl 2 sorceress as a scroll caddy, as I usually run out of other useful things to give her instead. But if I am just using her purely for magic defence, I'll keep her as a lvl 1 and throw the 2 scrolls on her.
There isn't any need for scroll caddies in 1k games. There are either not enough magic to care or too much magic (pretty rare, but some Tzeentch and VC armies can have more magic than your dispel capabilities). And with two sorceresses you already have more DD than most other 1k armies. Just use the huge amount of PD and kill of the enemy wizards with spells. In larger games though 1500 and up you may want have same scrolls at hand.
