So, as a mount for dreadlords, how would you rate the manticore against the other mounts?
I wouldn't use it on a Dreadlord as it's far too weedy. That said, it has a good number of high S attacks, KB, flight, rank-breaking with the rider, and Terror for a reasonable cost. The Frenzy problem can be mitigated by high Ld.
But it just isn't hard enough. T5 only goes so far, and as a Large target it's too easy to draw a bead on.
But you mileage may vary.

Fraid that the Manticore appears to be the poor man's Dragon or even Griffon, a Griffon is quite capable of tearing one apart. Its nice for the high S, the fact it can killing blow enemies (but high strength mitigates this anywya - most things aren't going to get up when hit by a Manticore!)
Agree that T5 is very poor - it means most GW armed infantry are going to cause ity a world of hurt if they survive its attacks, as are cavalry, and most other monsters, if they get teh drop. And if the Dreadlord is better armoured/protected, its giving away some easy wounds for combat resolution. If I knoew I was facing a Manticore, I wouldn't be very worried - as a HE player at the very least, I have significantly better options, and even my grunts can wound the thing, albeit on 6s....If it were a Dragon, then I'd have bigger problems, and would have to divert more RBT fire against it, else face down something I would be hard pressed to kill.
depends on who you're facing. It's not a bad buy for the things it brings to the table. I've just never found any of the super uber terror causers worth the trouble. I like to win my games without those crutches. Downside is you're going to be the target of shooting and magic til you get into combat, The same can be said of a dragon though. I think with DE, the Pegasus is probably a better buy. If it dies turn 1, it's not the end of the world.
I think if you are going to use a manticore or any other monstrous creature, the best thing to do is use more than 1. By using a dragon and a manticore, or 2 manticores you should see much better success.
My brother uses a manticore as a mount for his Beastmaster, it's a good flanking unit.
I generally agree that a manticore is too easy to kill for it's pts. At least for competitive play. For friendly play it really doesn't matter.
